Enhancing the student experience: measuring value and demonstrating impact over a one year period in the Hull York Medical School Catriona Kemp
Background • Measure exercise • Results & comments • Next steps • Validation • Future
Background • ‘One of the new’: established 2003 • Students have a Hull or York University base • NHS placements from year 1 • Dispersed geography... • Ring-fenced budget
The Universities of Yin and Yang • The challenge creating a single HYMS service via two universities and numerous NHS sites • Resources are via York Shibboleth, Hull and/or NHS Athens
Value impact measure: rationale • No central university library measure covers all of HYMS • Seen by School students and staff as bespoke • Continuing history of annual/biennial consultations • Personally: getting back into the loop: • a year with Captain Barnacles et al
Methods • Survey Monkey • Jan/Feb 2011 • Open to all HYMS students • Questions not limited to Library: concerned with complete student experience • reading lists, • curriculum..
Example questions • Varying/detailed responses received for questions such as: • What texts would you recommend a student purchase? • If there are particular areas where you feel more guidance is needed (e.g. specific Blocks/Themes) please give details? • Do you have any book purchase suggestions for the libraries?
% 14% response rate 92% of respondents indicated that they used paper books and 24% indicated that they used personal, or library subscribed, ebooks The average number of texts purchased per year was 4, but varied from 0 to 12 per annum The average spent on texts per annum by HYMS students was £56, but varied from £0-500 per individual per annum 27% of respondents indicated that they shared the cost of purchasing books with PBL or other student groups 36% of respondents indicated that they sold or purchased books to/from other HYMS students 93% of respondents indicated that they would be interested in a HYMS online area to facilitate the selling and purchase of books amongst students
But... “Lack of core books that HYMS recommend and great difficulty and complication in accessing articles! Could be improved greatly!” “It would be helpful if there was just one site which pooled together all the journals that hyms students can access via athens/nhs/hull uni/york”
Actions to improve access and awareness, and to purchase appropriate suggested resources. Do this via: • Building the community • Libguides • Institutional cross search tool development • Discussions and results • Second hand book exchange area development
Actions: Community • Ensuring feedback to community Tangible results (immediately identifiable book purchases) fed back within a week • Ongoing (still) You asked, we did • Continuing the conversation And being seen to listen
Actions: Libguides • Synchonised with Blackboard:
Actions: Libguides • And aimed at mobile:
Actions: cross search tools • Take an advantage • eResources across two Universities, • perceived as a disadvantage • difficulty identify and accessing when via two • and making it into an advantage again • cross search allowing collections to be searched simultaneously
Actions: Discussions • Collated student input • Helping the debate with academic colleagues regarding reading lists • Good in own right, but also:
Results: Additional funds • Aiding in successful bids for capital funds • i.e. more e/books • £30,000 over two years
Actions: Readcycle • Development of online HYMS book exchange area:
