Note! Hydrophobia can also mean Rabies – the disease that sends sufferers mad. It is called Hydrophbobia because a person or animal with it will show a fear of water. Hydrophobia: fear of water
Acrophobia: fear of heights Note! If you feel dizzy while looking down from a high place it is called vertigo (from the Latin word for whirling)
Arachibutyrophobia: fear of getting peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth
Why do We Fear? • Your surroundings become unknown • There is anticipation (What will happen?) • There is the known (You have seen this happen before! It is going to be painful) • Past experiences (everyone’s different)
What happens? • Flood of adrenaline into the body • Heart rate and blood pressure increases • Pupils dilate to take in as much light as possible • Veins in skin constrict to send more blood to major muscle groups • Muscles tense up • Nonessential systems shut down
