A Chinese American Fulfils American Dream Life experiences in China – Arrival to the U.S. as a students in 1986 Completed University Study and Graduate School in U.S. (1986-1990) First Job in U.S. at a United Way Agency – “Houston Chinese Community Center “- helping new comers’ children and parents (1990-94) Asian Pacific Islander Specialist for United Way Greater Houston (1994-96) Run a Campaign for the United Way in U.S. Corporation (1996-2007) Serving the Chinese American Community – bridging the cultures and promote friendships (1993-present) ; Volunteering with United Way International in the Global Standard initiative project and training in China (2005-2007) Funded Chinese Philanthropy Global Partnership Inc. (2007- present)

Asian Pacific Islander Community Campaign Questions from campaign trails: What is United Way? Are you a government Agency? Why give to United Way? We have paid Taxes . United Way does not fund programs into our Communities. We do not have representative there. language and cultural barriers: Many segments in The Asian Pacific Islander communities: Chinese Japanese Vietnamese Korean India Pilipino and more
Differences and issues • Policies and service delivery systems – Gov. vs. NGO • Donor motivations – Tax laws, family own businesses • Values – Family help vs. Institutional Services • Attitude to Foreign Donations • Administration Cost for charitable organizations • Priority of the social problems: China - Education, financial support for health care, seniors service, disaster relief, Korean – Women’s Abuse Japan – Seniors Indonesia – disaster relief from tsunamis • Advocate and capacity building is important but not popular
