  2. What is Momentum Bike Clubs? • A group mentoring program for middle school kids who need extra support in their lives to set and reach their life goals • Modeled after AMACHI – “Who knows but what we have been given in this child….” • Two primary goals: • Establish group mentoring opportunities using principles of positive youth development • Experience the benefits of physical fitness through cycling, as well as exposure to healthy nutrition

  3. Bike Clubs seek to support middle school youth who have multiple risk factors • Targeted kids have an “accumulation of risk,” multiple risk factors that occur in their families and communities • Risk includes: • Living in persistent poverty • Instability in caregiving arrangements • Multiple moves to new homes • Parental risk factors (e.g., mental health problems, substance abuse, incarceration, ongoing criminal activity) • Exposure to traumatic events • Lack of parental role models

  4. Why Biking? “Adolescents who cycle are 48% less likely to be overweight as adults.” ~ Cycle Kids

  5. Furman University’s Riley Fellows DLI-ted to Bike: Spring 2010

  6. History & Vision • With the formation of the first bike club in 2010 in the Sterling community, there are now 5 bike clubs (Sterling, Nicholtown, Berea, Lakeview, and Challenge) serving over 45 young people. • 5 new bike clubs are launching in 2014: Sullivan Street, Camp Opportunity, Legacy Charter School, and 2 Girl-Power bike clubs with The Junior League of Greenville • If bike club members display consistent loyalty to the group and stay out of trouble at school and in the community for the first year, they are allowed to take ownership of their bike.

  7. Sterling Spinners Banquet 2010
