  2. Slavery • Increasingly divided the nation and led to the Civil War.

  3. Slavery North • Did not need slaves for work • Wanted new states to be free states • Should be abolished for moral reasons South • Believed slaves were essential to the South’s way of life • Wanted new states to be slave states • Ending slavery would destroy their economy

  4. Cultural • Because of their differences, people of the North and South found it difficult to agree on social and political issues.

  5. Cultural North • Mainly urban society (cities) • People held jobs South • Primarily agricultural society (farming) • People lived in small villages and on farms and plantations

  6. Economic • TARIFFS = TAXES

  7. Economic North • Industrialization (manufacturing) region • People favored tariffs that protected factory owners and workers from foreign competition South • Agricultural (farming) • Opposed tariffs that would cause prices of manufactured goods to increase • Were concerned that Great Britain might stop buying cotton from the South if tariffs were added.

Constitutional North • Believed national govt’spower was supreme over that of the states. • Nation was a Union that could not be divided South • Had power to declare any national law illegal • Believed states had freely created and joined the Union and could freely leave it • Feared North would take control of Congress so proclaimed states’ rights as a mean of self-protection

  10. State’s Secession • Southern states that were dependent upon labor-intensive cash crops seceded from the Union.

  11. Words You Need to Know • Secession (Seceded): to leave or no longer a part of the US. • Border States: slave states that remained part of the Union (US); did not secede. • West Virginia: Western counties of Virginia that refused to secede from the Union (US).
