EndNote Endnote Training 23rd April 2009 Helen Loader hll1105@soton.ac.uk
Benefits of EndNote • Keeping track of your resources and references • Accurate and consistent referencing, bibliographies and reading lists • “cite while you write” enables • referencing to be switched from one style ie Harvard to MLA at the touch of a button • customised/individual referencing styles (if you buy your own copy • references can be changed from ‘in text’ to footnotes or endnotes
Aims for today’s session • Create a reference library and add references by • Manually entering references • Connecting to COPAC • Importing a text file • Exporting a reference • “Cite while you write” • Link with word • Alter references within a document • Format a bibliography/reading list • Manage EndNote Library • Create a reading list
Adding References to EndNote • Manually • Importing text files • Exporting from search facilities ie CSA, Ingenta, EBSCO • Connecting to online databases - COPAC
Manual Entries • Open Endnote Library • Select new reference >reference type • Enter information in fields • Data previously entered turns from red font to black • Links to pdf files and internet webpages can be added • Keywords are important – the more you put in the more you get back
Manual Entries • A comma at the end of the author name will allow a Company or institution name like The Department of Education to remain as is instead of being configured as Education, T. D of, • The ‘preferences’ option under edit allows all kinds of adaptations to explore, but particularly useful is the ‘change case’ list which allows a name to remain as ‘McCall’ instead of Maccall
Import a Text File • Save database search as a text file • Open endnote library>File>Import • Choose text file • Select import filter – specified by database provide • Import • I rarely get this to work
Connecting to COPAC • Tools > Connect > Connect… • Scroll to COPAC • Click Connect • Search for required reference • Select and click Copy 1 Reference To, then choose appropriate library • This is an excellent and fast way of getting a comprehensive list of resources • Remember to delete duplicates
“Cite while you write” • Word and EndNote link up to provide a quick way of citing in essays etc. • In Word, check that EndNote is listed under Tools • View Endnote toolbar • If not…..
Configuring Word with Endnote • Contact Student Services • Refer to Adept Science web site – it offers excellent and easy to follow advise. This is particularly if you have a older version of endnote and wish to use it on a Vista laptop. The toolbar then appears as an ‘addin’ • The website is www.adeptscience.co.uk
“Cite while you write” • When you wish to cite a source: • Open existing EndNote Library • Position cursor and click on EndNote icon • Select appropriate reference • In Tools, go to CWYW and click ‘Insert Selected Citation’ • In text references can be clicked and dragged into endnotes or footnotes • Bibliography is automatically updated • Editing output styles is only possible if you have your own version. • Best money I ever spent
Manage Library • Choose output style • Remember to check for duplicate entries on a regular basis • From the reference menu > change and move fields, data can be added to more than one reference at a time • From the tools menu > subject bibliography, lists from each field or reference type can be created
Creating a Reading List • Select references • By searching references • By using ctrl+ highlighting references • Click on Edit>Copy formatted • Open a word document and paste • By using the annotated output style, abstract notes are available for a brief description of resource
