1. Heading – A Doll’s House 7 Marriage Today, there are hints for why perhaps Nora married Torvald. List every possible reason why you would marry someone. (I would bet that nobody shall guess the reason I have wrote down). Because your parents liked them?

2. Homework • Reading page 45-46 • How does Nora hope to get out of trouble? (Answer on page 46)

3. Small task • Write down this statement and your opinion of what it means. • ‘Pride comes before a fall’. (Remember – pride is one of the 7 deadly sins)

4. TorvaldHelmer notes • Torvald holds the belief that a man’s role in a marriage is to protect and ‘guide’ his wife. • He likes to think of himself as ‘the man of the house’, without whom Nora would be lost. • This is yet another ‘mask’ however. Torvald is perhaps the most childlike character is the play. • (What do you think I mean by this? What’s childlike?)

6. The reflective response reading journal Write down your opinions on characters and events. • “little squirrel will dance and do lots of tricks” – Nora talking about herself? Any thoughts about her self-respect? • Helmer helped Nora’s father – is that why they got married? • Do you agree with Helmer at all that he should not listen to his wife’s request – that it would make him look weak at the bank? • Helmer got a bit angry there – are we seeing his true colours? • Do you have any questions about the reading or your notes – masks? 7. Masks • We all wear masks in a way. • Write down an introduction of yourself. (Introduce yourself) and write what ‘roles’ you play, what you are ‘like’. (How would you introduce yourself on a date or to a new friend. Can you see any masks you may wear?)
