Add extra weeks using code TCRSTTX About this Project: The Pacific Sea Turtle Project is a conservation initiative undertaken to protect endangered sea turtles and their nests, and improve the chance for survival of hatchlings on Matapalo Beach. Using man-made turtle hatcheries (called 'viveros') to protect turtle eggs and joining in vigilant beach patrols, volunteers provide vital resources and support. Life as a volunteer: •Discover how sea turtle conservation programs around the world work to protect these fascinating and endangered creatures•Participate in night patrols along the beach to ensure the safety of turtles and their nests•Collect data and and work to maintain the area•Depending on the season, monitor baby turtle hatcheries, count turtles and release them into the ocean•Visit nearby Manual Antonio National Park on a free weekend•Enjoy warm Pacific beaches and incredible sunsets—right out front of your shared volunteer dorm.

With lots going on, you will spend your time volunteering teaching English classes and participating in various activities. For example, one of the newer Planeterra-supported projects in the region is the recycling program, which not only separates plastic, cans and glass but transforms manure into organic fertilizer to be used in the project’s nursery. Talk about sustainable! Life as a volunteer: •Spend half days volunteering as an assistant in English classes to improve conversational abilities of students learning tourism•Help out in the practice kitchen, the computer lab, in the dairy and cheese workshop, or in the tree nursery and recycling programs•Take surf lessons on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, one of the best places on earth to learn to surf!•In your spare time, learn about the onsite sea turtle conservation project, relax on the beach and take in the gorgeous Pacific sunsets.

This project is a must for nature lovers looking to make a real difference in conservation and protection of sea turtles. Add extra weeks using code TCRCSTX About this Project: Located in Tortuguero on the coast of Costa Rica, the Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation project studies turtles nesting on unprotected beaches. The globally endangered green, leatherback, hawksbill and loggerhead sea turtles come ashore to nest on beaches accessible from the station. Volunteers will take part in night patrols and will assist in tagging and data collection. There are no roads in the area, and visitors to Caño Palma arrive by boat via a network of rivers and canals. This project works to rehabilitate injured animals and seeks to educate the public of the need to protect their habitats. Life as a volunteer: •Assist with receiving and evaluation of recently arrived animals•Introduce animals to their new living quarters according to their natural habitats•Cleaning of cages and living areas•Maintenance of facilities•Preparation of animal diets and foods•Daily care and eventual liberation of animals back into the forest

The project is supported by volunteers from around the world and financed largely by the private sector. Set in a valley surrounded by forested mountains, the park offers a peaceful home for its residents—over 30 neglected and abused elephants. Instead of working for humans, the elephants are cared for by a team of full-time staff and park volunteers.
