  1. Genetic Modification ‘On the origin of GM’

  2. Home: On the origin of GM • Home page image • Copy right • Social media buttons to share link • Part of science communication is generating debate. Social media sites (like Facebook & Twitter) are where many people share links about interesting sites. Thus it is integral to any new site. • Links to: • About (this will be a page about me and why I put this site together) • Site map • Different website sections (these are listed in the following slides)

  3. What is GM • Definition of GM • When it was first used / discovered • How it is different to cloning • This will link to the clone beef stories from a few years ago. There was some confusion over the difference and GM was brought into the debate under the umbrella of “Frankenfoods”

  4. How are GM plants made • Information about the main techniques used in plant transformation: • Bio gun • Agrobacteriumtumefaciens • Information about the bacteria will be more expansive in a separate section • I think it is important to have background to understand where the science comes from. I think lack of context means that only half the story is told.

  5. A. tumefaciens • More about the bacteria: • Diagram to show the bacterial cell • More about the disease it causes in nature (which is called Crown Gall disease) • Why it was selected for plant transformation

  6. Uses of GM plants • Where GM plants are used • Why use GM plants – link to current / future concerns • Crop resistance • Drought resistance • Benefits of GM to farmers • Statistics about disease crop losses • Benefits to consumers • Example of Golden Rice™

  7. Where are GM plants used • What countries allow GM plants to be grown • Legal stance of: UK, USA, EU • Links to pages that have the official information • I think it is important to have links where appropriate. Any good science communication site should have links to sources as it helps give credibility to what is being said if you can see the original information.

  8. Concerns and benefits of GM • Concerns • Quote from Steve Jones’ BBC impartiality report • Benefits • Primary benefits • Secondary benefits • Tertiary benefits

  9. On the origin of GM flowchart

  10. Who is the site aimed at? To quote Doll & Peto: “interested non-specialists”. I will pitch it for young adults plus, so 16+. I want this site to be accessible to anyone who has taken the time to look for information. I will have explanations for any specialist vocabulary. I do not want the site to be condescending so I do not want to omit this vocabulary, but I think it is important to explain it in case it is unfamiliar to the audience.

  11. Colour scheme • Much like this PowerPoint, I would like the colour scheme to be white and green. • The information is about plants so green is the obvious choice. It connotes and denotes plants. • I looked on Kuhler, and saw two schemes I liked: • Gradient green • This green • http://kuler.adobe.com/#themes/search?term=green

  12. Feedback I have not figured out a good way to incorporate a feedback mechanism. I think with a topic like GM, which is very sensitive issue, you have to be careful as polljacking can be an issue (I speak from experience with a climate change comments section I moderated). I think rather than having a comments section, I might go for an online voting system, as I think it ought to have an interactive element that would not require constant site moderation.
