  3. Caterpillar wasps • Caterpillar wasps lay their eggs inside caterpillars so the young eat the caterpillar from the inside.

  4. Mating Systems • Monogamous species- males and females pair for the breeding season or even for life. Example: swans • Polygamous species- an individual mates with a number of partners of the opposite sex during a breeding season. Example: deer

  5. Monogamy and polygamy • What are the advantages of polygamy to the successful males, and what are the advantages to the females? • What are the disadvantages? • What about the offspring?

  6. Definitions • Monogamous – where males and females pair for the breeding season or even for life. • Polygamous – where one individual mates with a number of opposite sex partners during the breeding season. • Pair bonding – the behaviour which forms bonds between a male and female of the same species keeping them together.
