  1. KMIS – AIG2013 - 2014 “Magnificent Minds”

  2. Monica Fisher • I taught 5th and 6th grade AIG at KMIS for the last three years. The previous 5 years were also at KMIS teaching 6th grade math and science. Prior to teaching at KMIS, I have taught a mixture of 6th and 8th grade math, science, reading, and language arts at KMMS and Algebra I at KMHS.

  3. Lisa McDowell • I have taught AIG for twenty-two years at the elementary and middle school levels. I am currently serving two schools, Shelby Intermediate School and Kings Mountain Intermediate. I will be at KMIS on Wednesday morning, Thursday, and Friday.

  4. 2013- 2016 AIG Plan • In compliance with state guidelines, a revised AIG plan is implemented this year to serve our AIG students in Cleveland County. • The plan emphasizes serving our students in a more equitable manner across the district.

  5. Area of Identification • Students are placed in AIG according to their area of giftedness. • A student may show giftedness and qualify in reading, math, or in both areas.

  6. Services Needed • AIG students have a Differentiated Education Plan (DEP) that dictates their area of service. • Students are required to receive services in each of their identified areas of giftedness. • We are serving our students with one 55-minute class per week in each of their identified areas.

  7. Weekly Schedule • Your child will come to class with AIG students from his/her team at the assigned time for reading and/or math each week. These times are typically during their WIN block with the exception of 6th grade AIG band students. • All 5th and 6th grade AIG identified students not involved in 6th grade band will be assigned additional enrichment class times during the WIN block with the AIG teachers. • A weekly AIG schedule will be posted on my website for each team as soon as it is finalized.

  8. 6th Grade AIG Band Students • Band is scheduled during the WIN block for our 6th grade students. • AIG identified band students will be assigned a time to attend AIG class. The scheduled time will be in place of one Encore class during the school year. • If the student is identified in math and reading, the second AIG class will be scheduled during the team portion of the instructional day.

  9. Enrichment with a focus on Reading • Enhance the Reading/LA curriculum • Higher Order and Critical Thinking Skills • 21st Century Goals and Objectives • Common Core Standards • In-class Projects • Interdisciplinary Units • Writing Prompts • Variety of Literary Texts

Student Expectations • Students are expected to attend AIG class at the assigned time. • Students should arrive in a timely manner to receive the full instructional time. • Students are responsible for checking with their classroom teacher for assignments that were missed and need to be completed while in AIG class.

  14. Needs Determination Team • A Needs Determination Team (NDT) for the upcoming school year has recently being created. • The NDT will be responsible for looking at teacher referrals, student work samples, and testing information to make a recommendation for placement of new AIG students.

  15. Placement of Students • Students are currently identified and placed in our AIG program based on their area of giftedness (reading and/or math). • Additional students can be placed in the program each year after going through the appropriate steps of the placement process. • A gifted student is typically a conscientious self-directed learner that would benefit from more enrichment and higher-order critical thinking activities than are provided in the regular classroom.

  16. When Do AIG Classes Begin? • We plan to start following our AIG schedule on Tuesday, September 3rd. • This will allow time to get students settled into their team schedule and teach school procedures without interruption.

  17. What Does My Child Need For Class? • I would like for each child to have a 3-ring binder (any color), notebook paper, and a pencil for class.

  18. A Work In Progress • As we are beginning this new school year, we may be adjusting periodically to make sure that we are serving our students in the best way possible. Please work with us as we strive to do what we feel is in the best interest of our AIG students at KMIS!
