Current problems with information supply Our current information policy resembles the worst aspects of our old agricultural policy, which left grain rotting in thousands of storage files while people were starving. We have warehouses of unused information rottingwhile critical questions are left unanswered and critical problems are left unresolved. Al Gore
Current problems in access to information A picture that captures in one image how doctors feel about information
Utility of information Utility=relevance x validity x interactivity work to access

From web1.0 to web 3.0 • “The development of the graphicalweb from its early days in 1995 to the social web of late 2011is comparable to the developing brain.” • "Whereas web 1.0 and 2.0 were embryonic, formative technologies, web 3.0 promises to be a more mature web where better ‘pathways’for information retrieval will be created, and a greater capacityfor cognitive processing of information will be built.”
Current state of the web • Web 2.0 is primarily about the benefits of easyto use and free internet software • Blogs and wikisfacilitate participation and conversations across a vast geographicalexpanse • Information pushing devices, like RSS feeds, permitcontinuous instant alerting to the latest ideas in medicine • Multimedia tools like podcasts and videocasts are increasinglypopular in medical schools and medical journals

Finding the best evidence • In medicine, finding the best evidence has become increasinglydifficult, even for librarians • Despite its constant accessibility,Google’s search results are emblematic of an approachingcrisis with information overload, and this is duplicated byYahoo and other search engines • Consequently, medical librariansare leading doctors back to trusted sources, such as PubMed,Clinical Evidence, and the Cochrane Library, and even takingthem to their library bookshelves instead. • Unless better channelsof information are created in web 3.0, we can expect the informationglut to continue.
