A Brief History (pg. 609-610) • The coast of India has been a site of trade for centuries. • Arabs who traded with India conquered it in the 8th century. • 1498 De Gamma discovers India • British East India Trading Company
The Mughal Empire (pg. 610) • 1526- Babur controls northern India • 1556- Akbar controls western India and parts of Eastern India • 1658- Aurangzeb controls south India
The Mughal Empire • Descendants of Genghis Khan • Muslims • Akbar was their greatest known ruler
Akbar the Great • 13 years old • Akbar's rule greatly influenced the culture • From religion to the arts Akbar made a huge impact. • He removed the Jizyah tax. • He was tolerant of other religions.
The Arrival of the British • 1600 Queen Elizabeth I gave trade rights to the East India Trade Company to trade in India • By 1818 Great Britain controlled the region • The British brought changes: • Technology: telegraph, railroads, steamships • Legal System: land ownership, English is the official language
Indian Independence (From Britain) • 1885 the Indian National Congress was formed. • Mohandas Gandhi becomes leader of the Indian National Congress • He seeks Indian independent though non violent methods.
India and Pakistan • India split into two countries • India- Hindu • Pakistan- Muslim • They fight over Kashmir which is a majority Muslim but in India.
The Caste System • In India people are divided by wealth and occupation in the caste system • Braham's- Priests • Kshatriya- Rulers (governing functions) • Vaishya- Agriculture and traders • Shudra- serve the other three castes
