Cities Suffer Decline • suburban migration • loss of middle class • Political power shift • Loss of tax money • African Americans move into city looking for jobs. • Poverty lead to bad inner city conditions and crime
Urban Poverty • Urban Renewal government project to improve city • Built Highways and Housing • Backfired because they were forcing people from their homes • Housing Projects started • Poverty in one area = rise in crime • “The Other America” • Book on widespread poverty
Rural Poverty • Rural poor also suffer • Corporate farming takes over • Small farms could not compete • Many farmers moved to city in search of jobs
Had little power Limited Government help Many lived in poverty in the city Ended tribal government and moved to cities Mexican migrant farm workers given visas Many were exploited and cheated by employers Federal responsibility for their health care and welfare stopped. Fear of deportation
