Part I Developing the Standards
Developing the Standards Background • WV Department of Education, Office of Child Nutrition • School Nutrition Programs (NSLP, SBP, FFVP) • Summer Food Service Program • Child and Adult Care Food Program • West Virginia Board of Education Policy 4321.1, Standards for School Nutrition (7/1/2008) • Created a nutritional quality gap between programs
Developing the Standards Partnerships, Part I • Delaware Department of Education • First state to implement standards for nutrition and physical activity in child care settings • Delaware CACFP/Delacare Child Nutrition and Physical Activity Rules • Based on the American Academy of Pediatrics child nutrition best practices and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans • Applied to both Child Care Centers AND Day Care Homes • Implemented through CACFP and their Office of Child Care Licensing (OCCL)
Developing the Standards “Leap of Taste” • West Virginia Department of Education • Developed the “Leap of Taste” Child Care Nutrition Standards • Modeled after Delaware’s initial “Delacare” Nutrition Rules • Applied for, but did not receive initial funding, to help develop and implement Leap of Taste • Moved forward with the standards without funding • Unlike the Standards for School Nutrition, did not need legislative or board approval, a public comment period, etc.
