Hydropower and Dams By: Maggie Curran, Cara LaMotta, and Tara McKeon
How its used to create energy • A large pipe delivers water to the turbine • Spins a generator • Produces energy
Types of Dams • Reservoir-type storage • impound water behind the dam for seasonal, annual and, in some cases, multi-annual storage and regulation of the river. • Run-of-river dams • weirs and barrages, and diversion dams create a hydraulic head in the river to divert some portion of the river flows to a canal or power station.
Disadvantages Advantages • Hydropower • Irrigation • Water supply • Flood control • Renewable • Cheap • Jobs • Recreation/boating/fishing • Human Displacement • Flooding • Social Disruption • Costly • Sedimentation Clogs • Decaying Vegetation • Diseases
Advantages • Hydropower • Irrigation • Water supply • Flood control • Multipurpose
Future Endeavors • Low-Head Hydropower • Run-of-River Flow • Micro-Hydro Generators • Reduce demand • Enhance supply & efficiency • Improve land & watermanagement • Promote alternative supply options
