  2. Landmarks Buenos Aires’ Obelisk, or Obelisco de Buenos Aires, is a national historic monument and symbol of Buenos Aires. It is located in Plaza de la Republica. It was built to memorialize the institution of the city. The obelisk is part of the nightlife of Buenos Aires, and creates an area similar to Times Square, New York. The construction began March 20, 1936 and it was finished May 23, 1936. On the southern side of the obelisk is a verse written by Baldomero Moreno: “¿Donde tenía la ciudad guardada esta espada de plata refulgente desenvainada repentinamente y a los cielos azules asestada? Ahora puede lanzarse la mirada harta de andar rastrera y penitente piedra arriba hacia el Sol omnipotente descender espiritualizada. Rayo de luna o desgarrón de vienten símbolo cuajado y monumento índice, surtidor, llama, palmera. La estrella arriba y la centella abajo, que la idea, el ensueño y el trabajo giren a tus pies, devanadera.”

  3. landforms Rio De la Plata Rio de la Plata passes through Buenos Aires and marks its border. Rio de la Plata also goes through Uruguay, one of Argentina’s neighbors. It is about 220 kilometers, or 180 miles long, an 2 kilometers, or 1.2 miles wide. The Río de la Plata is home for the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, Green Sea Turtle, Leatherback Sea Turtle, the rare La Plata Dolphin, and many species of fish. The Río de la Plata was first explored by Europeans in 1516 trying to find a route between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

  4. History Buenos Aires was founded twice. A settlement at the present day site was established briefly in 1536 by conquistador Pedro de Mendoza, but attacks by local native tribes forced the settlers to move to Asunción, Paraguay in 1539. By 1541 the site had been burned and abandoned. In 1580, another settlement was established, and this one lasted. As the city grew, it became too powerful for the local tribes to attack, but became the target of European pirates and privateers. At first, much of the growth of Buenos Aires was in prohibited trade, as all official trade with Spain had to go through Lima, Peru. Argentina became independent in 1816 led by San Jose Martin.

  5. Government The Executive is held by the Chief of Government, elected for a four-year term together with a Deputy Chief of Government, who controls the 60 legislature members. Each member of the Legislature is elected for a four-year term and half of the legislature is renewed every two years. The Judicial branch is composed of the Supreme Court of Justice, the Magistrate's Council, the Public Ministry, and other City Courts. The Article 61 of the 1996 Constitution of the City of Buenos Aires states that "Suffrage is free, equal, secret, universal, compulsory and non-accumulative. Resident aliens enjoy this same right, with its corresponding obligations, on equal terms with Argentine citizens registered in the district, under the terms established by law."
