Right Care Survey Key findings: 85% report committing to become dementia-friendly made a difference to their trust 98% report senior managers at their hospital are still committed to becoming dementia-friendly 73% report increased staffing resources for improving dementia care 29% report reduced delayed discharge of people with dementia 61% report improvements in the quality of discharge of people with dementia 51% report already having individualised care plans for people with dementia 80% report increased spend on dementia friendly wards The DAA will be: Conducting telephone interviews to pin down what support hospitals need Continue to inviting Right Care members to DAA Webinars Working with relevant national members to produce broad principals of what a dementia friendly hospital is

A dementia friendly community is one that shows a high level of public awareness, are more inclusive of people with dementia and carers, and improve independence and choice. • Local Dementia Action Alliances are the main vehicle for creating dementia-friendly communities. • DAA members have led the work in this area. • Different areas are taking different approaches • British Standard Institute has been contracted to develop a ‘code of practice’ of what a dementia friendly community is • Steering group to include key DAA members. All DAA invited to join reference group. • Interim findings in December / launch in February. Dementia Friendly Communities Recognition process

Survey of DAA Members and people with dementia and carers. • Two fold purpose – establish impact on people with dementia and carers / make case for successor to National Dementia Strategy/PM Challenge • Drafted by Worcester University with a input from a representative sample of members. • Based on ‘I’ statements of Declaration and Objectives of the National Dementia Strategy • Circulated in June – September. How are we doing? - Survey

Annual Report submission on summer / autumn • Quarterly Meeting in September • Annual Event in November / December • National members a telephone call or meeting over summer • Refresh of the DAA Website to underpin these areas of work • Increased staffing to meet challenge: • Full time DAA Digital Officer • Part time DAA Right Care Officer DAA Secretariat

Dear David • Request from Dementia Action Alliance for Care Quality Commission (CQC) to include dementia friendly environments within its inspection regime. • On the 6th May members of the Dementia Action Alliance met to discuss dementia friendly environments across a range for care settings from homes to hospitals. The following participants agreed that a dementia friendly environment improves care, also benefits people without dementia and should be considered in future CQC inspection regimes. • The DAA members listed below therefore request: • 1. The new model inspection regime includes environmental prompts such as: • Signage • Colour and décor • Lighting levels • Access to gardens and green space • Evidence of special resources rooms • Personalisation such as memory boxes • Floor coverings • 2. CQC includes case studies of good and bad environments within its upcoming dementia themed inspection programme national report. • 3. The DAA support CQC inspectors through running a free DAA Webinar Programme on dementia friendly environments. • We will be signposting national DAA members to the current CQC consultation on its new model to reiterate these views. • We would be delighted to receive a written response to confirm whether the CQC is able to fulfil these requests. • Yours sincerely,
