What is the Dementia Action Alliance? • Dementia Action Alliance is a social movement to improve the lives of people with dementia • Response to the Prime Minister’s Dementia Challenge • Aims to create more dementia friendly communities • Member organisations sign up to the National Dementia Declaration and produce a short Action Plan • Over 900 members across England • National and regional secretariat hosted by Alzheimer’s Society
National Dementia Declaration • I have personal choice and control or influence over decisions about me • I know that services are designed around me and my needs • I have support that helps me live my life • I have the knowledge and know-how to get what I need • I live in an enabling and supportive environment where I feel valued and understood • I have a sense of belonging and of being a valued part of family, community and civic life • I know there is research going on which delivers a better life for me now and hope for the future

Signing up to the DAA Your action plan • How would you describe your organisation’s role in delivering better outcomes for people with dementia and their carers? • What are the challenges to delivering these outcomes from the perspective of your organisation? • What are your plans as an organisation to respond to these challenges?
Signing up to the DAA • Embeds recognition of dementia within an organisation • Focus is on action • Guidance notes and support for writing action plans Once completed… • Action plan published on the DAA website (you can login to edit) • Expectation of an annual update • Members able to use logo
Local Alliances • Communities can set up a Local Dementia Action Alliance, bringing together DAA members in a local area • Currently over 60 across England • Vehicle to deliver more dementia friendly communities • Membership from local organisations in public, private and voluntary sectors • Coordinates local activity and encourages joint work • Manages recognition process for dementia friendly communities
Recognition process for communities • Have a Local Dementia Action Alliance • Identify local leader(s) to take responsibility • Have a plan to raise awareness of dementia • Involve people with dementia • Publicise activities • Focus on a few local priorities • Produce an update after 6 months and 1 year

Developing a Shropshire DAA • Emphasis on action and sign up • Promote local activity on dementia friendly communities • Quarterly meetings • Smaller steering group • Shropshire DAA webpage • Manage recognition process / logo • Coordination
