Party Time:Why, What, and How We Celebrate Presented by: Stefanie Adams (TD), Elizabeth Anderson(CY), MariafeArteaga (CIS), and Orlando Martinez (TD)
WELCOMECongratulations to our “Early Birds”! Please describe in one word how receiving a certificate made you feel…
Why do we celebrate? • “Creating a can-do climate for both students and staff starts with a school-wide culture of success, usually beginning with a collaboratively created vision of that school climate.” • “Positive school climate approaches build on staff and student assets and tap those assets to contribute to school-wide improvement initiatives.” Source: Pillar IV, TD Secondary Simply stated, celebrating success breeds success! We can motivate and engage our students by highlighting what they are doing right, rather than focusing on what is wrong.
Why do we celebrate? • “Research has shown that the implementation of punishment, especially when it is used inconsistently and in the absence of other positive strategies, is ineffective. Introducing, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important step of a student's educational experience. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding. The purpose of school-wide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.” Source: www.PBIS.org
What can we celebrate? • Attendance • Students AND Staff • Grades • Honors • Improvement • Behavior • “Caught Being Good” • Growth • Academic • Personal • Extracurricular Excellence • Capitalize on student interests
