  2. Identify how Shakespeare develops the thematic topics of “revenge” and “insanity” throughout Hamlet. Consider specific literary techniques from the play that help develop these thematic topics. Literary Analysis Prompt

  3. How long does it have to be? 4 paragraphs (Intro, 2 BPs, Conclusion) What does WWH stand for? What? Where? How? How many literary techniques do I need to talk about? 4 techniques = 4 quotes (2 WWHs in each body paragraph) Can I use the same literary techniques from BP1 in BP2? Yes! However, the evidence and analysis must be different If I am stuck, what should I do? Reference your scene summaries (you included a lot of great quotes!), look at your revenge quote chart, ask a neighbor, look it up, ask teacher FAQs

  4. “W” stands for WHAT What LITERARY TECHNIQUE are you going to focus on from Shakespeare’s Hamlet? “W” stands for WHERE Where is the strategy located in the play? This is where you use a direct quote with citation (Act.Scene.Line) that shows the literary technique at work in the play. “H” stands for HOW How does this strategy help to convey ______? Think about the technique’s effect on the reader and how it helps the reader better understand the theme of the piece as a whole. WWH?

  8. Task #1: Looking at your prompt page/prewrite sheet- start your writing journey by creating the thesis statement for your essay. Your thesis statement must clearly establish that your essay will discuss how Shakespeare develops the thematic topics of “revenge” and “insanity.” Prewriting

Task #2: • Spend the remainder of today working on the prewriting outline. • Use your thesis statement as a MAP for your essay. • Write down ideas/start looking for relevant quotes from Hamlet • At this stage in the writing process you do not need to worry about writing in complete sentences, and can EDIT later! Today’s Goals: Finish your outline & draft your introduction • Use your prewriting sheet as a guide • REMEMBER to include the title of the play as well as the author • Include any relevant background information you feel is necessary for audiences to fully understand the remainder of your essay (maybe a brief summary of the play will help) • Make sure you have a strong thesis statement that includes both the literary techniques you chose and the themes of insanity and revenge Drafting

Task #2 • In your table groups, take turns reading your introductory paragraphs to each other (READ ALOUD) • After each reader shares- provide ACTIONABLE feedback • Try to help all group members come up with the BEST possible intro paragraph- I will be randomly calling on some of you to share- you want to be PROUD of your paragraph! Task #3 Evidence for Body Paragraphs • Locate all of the quotes you will use from the play as evidence to help you describe how Shakespeare developed each theme in the play (and make sure you have the necessary information to cite these quotes) • (Act.Scene.Line) • Your essay must contain a minimum of 4 quotes Drafting

Task #4: • Using the textual evidence and analysis notes that you have collected- create your first body paragraph (focused on REVENGE) • Use the prewrite outline to help guide the structure of your first body paragraph • Don’t forget to lead into your quotes! • Don’t forget to cite your quotes! • Prepare to share with your group and the class when you are finished drafting this paragraph! Task #7 • In your table groups, take turns reading your concluding paragraphs to each other • After each reader shares- provide ACTIONABLE feedback • Try to help all group members come up with the BEST possible paragraph- I will be randomly calling on some of you to share- you want to be PROUD of your paragraph! Respond to 2 classmates on Peermark • Using the provided rubric as guidance for WHAT to look for, read the essay and provide feedback in EVERY AREA that the rubric covers • Provide POINTS for each area of the rubric, and assign the student a GRADE for the current state of their essay (it is a DRAFT- the grades should reflect this) Peer Editing Day
