The Westing Game A story about looking at things a different way. Written By Ellen Raskin Report By Robert Stradling
A patriot man by the name of Sam Westing was once a proud owner of a multi-million dollar franchise. Unfortunately for him, he was killed of a non-natural cause. 16 men and women were brought to the reading of his will. Several of these fine people were completely unaware that they were even related to Westing in any way. To determine who receives Westing’s fortune, a game is set in motion. Each of these possible heirs are partnered up with another, and are given a set of clues to solve the mystery of his death. I do not wish to spoil the end, but I will tell you this.
Out of all of these people, one is a bomber, one is a witch, one was a thief, one was an inventor, one is disguised, and one was not intended to be here in the first place. One of these people will die, and one will be accused of this person’s murder. This story has a lovely plot with plenty of twists none would expect. I don’t want to give much of the plot away, but everyone will have to unite to solve this murder mystery.
I know from personal experience that looking at something a different way can be vital to your success in whatever you plan to accomplish, even if it is hard. Some people are stubborn and do not want to change what they are looking at because they think they have it right. I have worked with people that are, and have been myself, stubborn in this way. Perfection is something desired in many people, causing many people not to change their ways when they think something is right for a time, regardless if they change their minds afterwards.
The author’s purpose in my eyes make perfect sense. The world would be better if people would not behave this way. Looking at any problem mankind has faced, we have prevailed throughout history. The most complex and confounding puzzles life may throw at us will become easily hurdled if we get a different perspective of it. By doing just this, we may grow up Utopia that all of the world, man and women alike, have dreamed of. A Short Biography on Ellen Raskins
