The Marshall Plan - 1947 • April 2 - 3, 2014 • Objective: Students will examine how the Marshall Plan fit into the strategy of containment and describe the position taken by supporters as well as critics through texts, debate and written response. • Warm-Up: “What impact did the Truman Doctrine have on other countries?” Use RACE (3-4) from your notes. Answer in your notebook.
The Marshall Planaka “European Recovery Program” • A four-year effort by the Truman Administration consisting of $13 billion in economic aid to Europe in order to rebuild the economies that had been devastated by World War 2. • Containment of Soviet influence was the objective since many believed that economic hardship would make Communism more appealing to some nations.
Choose one speaker from Group 2 and one speaker from Group 4. • Choose one speaker from Group 3 and one speaker from Group 5. • Groups 1 and 6 will be the people you will need to convince.
Each member of Groups 2,3,4,5 must contribute one argument to the speaker of their group from the text. • The speaker may only read arguments provided by his/her group. The speaker may not come up with the reasons to support or oppose the Plan. • Order: Speaker 2 Speaker 4 Speaker 3 Speaker 5
A straw vote will be taken after all four speakers have presented arguments. • Groups may then converse to compose final arguments. • Speakers have 30 seconds. • A final vote will be taken. Each member of the audience must provide one argument that convinced them to support or oppose the Marshall Plan.
Written response: • The year is 1947. In a letter to Pres. Truman, write two paragraphs that indicate either your support or opposition to the Marshall Plan. • You do not have to assume the same position from the debate but you must use evidence from one of the texts to support your position. • Turn in for a grade.
