  2. Standards SC.2.L.16.- Observe and describe major stages in the life cycles of plants and animals, including beans and butterflies. LACC.2.L.3.4 - Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies. 1. Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. 2. Determine the meaning of the new word formed when a known prefix is added to a known word (e.g., happy/unhappy, tell/retell). 3. Use a known root word as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word with the same root (e.g., addition, additional). 4. Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of compound words (e.g., birdhouse, lighthouse, housefly; bookshelf, notebook, bookmark). 5. Use glossaries and beginning dictionaries, both print and digital, to determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases. LACC.2.L.3.5 - Demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings. a. Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., describe foods that are spicy or juicy). b.Distinguish shades of meaning among closely related verbs (e.g., toss, throw, hurl) and closely related adjectives (e.g., thin, slender, skinny, scrawny). LACC.2.L.3.6 - Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts, including using adjectives and adverbs to describe (e.g., When other kids are happy that makes me happy).

  3. Introduction Have you ever wondered where butterflies come from? Do they just appear from no where? Are there little baby butterflies? How about caterpillars? What do they have to do with butterflies? Well, in this assignment you are going to have a chance to find out just how butterflies come to be by exploring the changes that occur in their life cycle.

  4. Task So what are you going to do? Each member in the group will take a stage of the life cycle. Stage 1: Egg Stage 2: Larva Stage 3: Pupa Stage 4: Adult Your job is to define you stage and write down facts to share with the other members of your group. Pay close attention to the words in bold, those are vocabulary words. Once all of the stages have their information, as a group, you will create a life cycle poster. Each stage must be illustrated, labeled and placed in the correct order. Neatness counts! We all want to see what you have learned!

  5. Process Let's Explore! 1. Students will meet in the group the teacher assigned them to. 2. Teacher will assign the stages at random. 3. Students will use the Information Sources to gather facts about their stage and define given vocabulary words. 4. The group will come together and share what was found for each stage and the definitions of their vocabulary words. Each member must have a copy of all vocab words. 5. As a group, work together to accurately illustrate and label the life cycle of a butterfly to create a poster.

  6. Stage 1: Egg Questions to keep in mind. What is the definition of egg? How do they get there? How many can be found? Where are they laid? What is metamorphosis?

  7. Stage 2: Larva Questions to keep in mind What is the definition of larva? How long does it take to emerge? What does it look like? What does it eat? What is its purpose during this stage? What is metamorphosis?

  8. Stage 3: Pupa Questions to keep in mind What is the definition of pupa? What is happening during this stage? What is the definition of metamorphosis?

  9. Stage 4: Adult Questions to keep in mind What is an adult butterfly? What has happened? Describe some parts of the butterfly. What is the definition of metamorphosis?

  11. Conclusion From beginning to end and all over again! Now we know where butterflies come from and what changes they go through during their stages of life. From their tiny beginnings as eggs to their transformation to beautiful delicate adult butterflies. Next time you are out exploring and you happen to see one of the stages, you will be able to amaze your friends and parents by sharing what you have learned!
