Life Cycle of a Butterfly Miss Jenn’s Class
st stage: Egg A butterfly begins life as a very small egg. Butterfly eggs are usually laid on the leaves of plants.
nd stage: Larva (caterpillar) When the egg hatches, out comes the butterfly larva, or caterpillar. In this stage the caterpillar eats so they can grow quickly.
rd stage: Pupa (chrysalis) Once the caterpillar is done growing they form themselves into a pupa, or chrysalis. Their metamorphosis happens inside the chrysalis; they are changing from a caterpillar into a butterfly.
th stage: Butterfly The butterfly comes out of the chrysalis in this stage. It needs to rest for a few hours and pump blood into its wings before it is able to fly.
