Welcome to the Fascinating World of Forensic Science!!!!! Forensic Scienceis the application of science to the criminal and civil laws that are enforced by police agencies in a criminal justice system
Divided into sections or units, each performing a specific type of work Modern Day Crime Lab
What is Physical Evidence? • Any tangible item that may help connect a place to a person or a person to another person (victim, suspect…) • Can be solid, liquid, or gas • Can be microscopically small to incredibly large
Fiction vs. Reality • Fictional World – Television shows and movies • Do these shows give an accurate view of Forensic Science?
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH?– Television shows show accurate science • REALITY – They are for the most part accurate in terms of scientific principles and procedures
What is Made for TV? • We do not all know everything about everything! • We do not carry guns (most of us)! • We do not interrogate suspects! • We do not have unlimited money! • We do not finish cases in an hour! • We do not all have fancy offices! • We do not drive Hummers!!
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH? – Forensic Scientists are like Sherlock Holmes and can solve complex problems and puzzles • REALITY – Often this is the case. If you can not solve puzzles or problems you will not make a good forensic scientist.
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH? – Forensic Scientists know everything about everything • REALITY – Most forensic scientists are trained in a specific discipline. Example, a firearms examiner probably does not know that much about the chemical means of identifying cocaine
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH?– Forensic scientists carry guns and go with the police to stake out a house • REALITY – Most forensic scientists DO NOT carry guns let alone pull them on people – and hardly ever go with the police to search for a suspect
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH?– Forensic scientists are involved in all steps of the investigative process, such as interrogations • REALITY – I do not know any forensic scientists that have EVER interrogated a suspect
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH?– Crime labs have fancy, multi-million dollar gadgets and gizmos that allow them to do just about anything • REALITY – Most crime labs are supported by taxpayer dollars and are woefully underfinanced
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH? – Cases are generally easy to solve and can be finished rather quickly (even with commercial breaks!) • REALITY – Some cases may be fairly simple but the majority take days even weeks to finish
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH?– The job is all about glitz and glamour like TV shows • REALITY – Many crime labs are in older, outdated buildings and often the public perception of the job is not accurate
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH? – All you do all day long is perform scientific work to solve cases • REALITY– You will spend about as much time on paperwork as you actually do on working cases
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH?– a CSI and a Forensic Scientist are the same thing • REALITY – No.
What is the difference? Crime Scene Investigator Often with police or detective experience Not always a scientist Collect evidence from and document crime scenes Forensic Scientist Analyze collected evidence in the laboratory MUST have degree in a science Rarely visit crime scenes CSI vs. Forensic Scientist
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH? – I can lie, cheat and fake my work as a forensic scientist as long as I get the bad guy • REALITY - Ethics are number one importance • YOU WILL GET FOUND OUT! – See Fred Zain and countless others - The Smell of Death?!?!?!
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH? – Becoming a Forensic Scientist is easy – I don’t really have to know that much math and science • REALITY – Wanna bet? Can you explain how DNA tests work to a jury if you don’t understand the science?
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH? – Forensic Science is really half science and half Criminal Justice • REALITY – Do you want to be a Forensic Scientist or a corrections officer?
MYTH? vs. REALITY • MYTH? – Forensic Scientists make lots of money • REALITY – Want to be rich? Marry into money!!! Average nationwide salary is ~$57,000 Where are the jobs?
