  2. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION WE WILL PROCEED WITH THE SESSION ON FIRE TRAINING ACTION IN CASE OF FIRE

  4. FIRE TRAININGINTRODUCTION Fire legislation requires all staff in certified premises have training in: 1. What to do in the event of a fire 2. Fire prevention

  5. Fire Authorities also require that all Fire Training is recorded. Your Manager will determine who is responsible for your Training i.e. Head of Department, and ensure that all staff receive the required training. First we shall look at an Introduction to: THE HOTELF I R EPLAN

  6. At the end of this session you will have a TOUR OF THE PROPERTY so that you are able to relate the content of the Training to your environment - especially in the areas where you will be working most often.

  7. On the TOUR the FOLLOWING will be POINTED OUT • Fire Alarm Call Points • Fire Exits and Escape Routes • Fire Doors • Fire Notices • Fire Extinguishers • Smoke Detectors • Heat Detectors • Emergency Lighting

  8. On the Tour, we shall also take note of… • Appropriate Storage Areas for flammable materials i.e. Christmas decorations • Correct Areas for Rubbish Disposal • Location of Emergency GAS Cut Off Valve

  9. How can we avoid confusion in the event of a Fire ? By Having a Plan By everyone knowing what to do Part of your job as a member of the Team of this Hotel is to be aware of your role in the evacuation of the Hotel in the event of a Fire

  10. In this session we will be discussing the FIRE ACTION PLAN We will look in detail at the hotel’s Fire Plan and your own role in ensuring it is carried out effectively should the need arise.

  11. Why do we need a Fire Plan ? 1. To determine what has to be done in the event of a Fire 2. To identify who does what in the event of a Fire Why is it important that we all know whodoes what in the event of a Fire ? 1. To reduce the danger • To ensure all guests & staff can escape • safely, quickly and without panic.

  12. What is the first thing you must do if you discover a Fire ? Raise the Alarm

  13. How can you raise the Alarm ? 1. By breaking the glass at a Fire Alarm Point 2. It will also be set off automatically by the Smoke or Heat Detectors.

  14. In addition to the sound of the Fire alarm… when working in a Restaurant, Bar or Banqueting Room what announcement would you make to demonstrate additional Guest Care?

  15. ‘Attention please. Would everyone please leave this room quickly and assemble at the Fire Assembly Point:- _________________ ‘Please remain calm’

  16. We must avoid alarming Guests wherever possible. Why ? Because they could panic What steps can we take to ensure that guests and colleagues do not panic ? 1. Be aware of our actions 2. Assist the guests in the process 3. Remain calm ourselves

  17. How do you activate a Break Glass Point ? 1. With the hammer provided 2. With the heel of a shoe 3. By pressing firmly with the thumb where indicated 4. With a bunch of keys Safety glass is used in a call point so it will not cut you

  18. TACKLING A FIRE Should we try to tackle a fire if we discover one ? Onlyif it is a small fire and you are not in danger as you have first ensured your escape route is behind you and clear at all times. Only tackle a small fire if you are comfortable about doing so. What could be considered to be a small fire? A waste paper bin or a frying pan. How many people must be at the scene of a fire before it is tackled ? A minimum of TWO

  19. ACTION ON HEARING THE ALARM What must your reaction be to the Fire Alarm? Immediately follow the evacuation procedure

  20. What must we do with elderly or injured guests if we see them? 1. Assist them 2. Inform the Senior Manager of any persons requiring assistance ANY QUESTIONS ?

  21. If we have time, what must we do with all windows and doors ? Close them Why? The extra air will fuel the fire Which Fire Exit must we use when evacuating from the Hotel? The nearest Exit to where you are at the time

  22. Why is it important that we do not run when evacuating the Hotel? • It can cause panic amongst other people • You are more likely to trip over

  23. If we have equipment in a corridor while we are working, what must we do when the Fire Alarm is sounded? Move the equipment out of the corridor into a room

  24. Where do we have to assemble? Fire Assembly Point _____________________

  25. Once you have left the building, why must you not re-enter the building until you have been instructed to do so by the Fire Service or the Senior Manager? 1. You may endanger yourself and the Fire Service. 2. If a role call has been taken you may not be missed

  26. Fire Alarms should not be turned off before the building is completely evacuated and the fire located. If the Alarm stops for any reason DO NOT stop evacuating - get out as quickly as possible and do not return to the building until you are told it is safe to do so. DO NOT SMOKE in front of Guests at Roll Call Point. ANY QUESTIONS ?

  27. DISCUSSING THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE It is a mistake to discuss the cause of a Fire. When you have evacuated the Hotel you must not pass opinion as to its cause i.e.if you think it a hoax, a fire practice or false alarm. Never discuss the cause of the fire

  28. Why is it important not to discuss the fire? Because Guests or other staff may: 1. Become annoyed 2. Become frightened 3. Wrongly return to the building Remember - stay calm and don’t discuss fire or the evacuation.

  29. CALLING THE FIRE BRIGADE How are the Fire Service called ? By Senior Person on Duty If you need to call the Fire Service what number would you need to dial ? 999 If you need to call the Fire Service but cannot use the switchboard use a mobile or public telephone.You do not need money to dial 999.

  30. Calling the Fire Brigade Dial 999 Who must you ask for when the operator answers? The Fire Service What information will the operator ask for? Name and address of the property

  31. What is the Name and Address of the Hotel? xxx yyy, zzz xyz What is on fire or is it just the Fire Alarm? Is everyone accounted for or is anyone missing? What telephone number are you calling from i.e. the Hotel number? The Hotel telephone number is zyx

  32. Who must you inform once you have called the Fire Service? Senior Manager Whose instructions must you follow when the alarm is sounded? Senior Manager Who is in charge once the Fire Service arrive? The Senior Fire Officer(usually a white helmet officer)

  33. On the arrival of the Fire Brigade 1. You must co-operate with them & 2. Follow the orders of theSenior Officer

  34. What assistance will the Fire Service require from us on their arrival? 1. To be taken to the location of the fire by the quickest route 2. To be told of any guests or staff who may have had difficulty in evacuating • To be advised of any suspected or confirmed missing persons in the area • To be advised of any injured person still in • the building

  35. A permanent reminder of your actions to follow in the event of a fire & how to call the Fire Service can be found on the fire instructions posted in all bedrooms & staff areas. ANY QUESTIONS ?

  36. EVACUATION Now let’s go through your Fire Action Plan and responsibilities in the case of an evacuation

  37. Read through the Fire Action Plan for your Department paying particular attention to: 1. Escape Routes 2. Location and method of raising the alarm i.e. break glass points 3. Location and type of extinguishers within the Department 4. Potential dangers during an evacuation i.e. obstructions

  38. 5. Extinguish all naked flames - candles, cooking appliances, chafing fuel and gas points and gas fires. • Secure guests records reports • Secure cash to take • Know methods of evacuating guests 9. Move Trolleys from corridors

  39. Where do we assemble? Hotel Car Park Entrance In the near future we will have a practice evacuation to ensure that you are fully aware of your responsibilities. ANY QUESTIONS ?
