  2. Country Overview • Phuket is the biggest island at 550sq km, the same size as Singapore, located in west coast of Southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Phuket is a mountainous covered by forest. The lowlands are comprised of rubber plantations, pineapples and coconuts. • Thanyapura Mind Centre (TMC) offers training in the cultivation of cognitive and emotional balance. TMC provides a blend of contemporary psychology and neuroscience alongside ancient Asian contemplative practices. Faculty Led Study Abroad studyabroad@thechicagoschool.edu

Course Description • The proposed Thailand study abroad will provide PsyD and Ma students an immersive experience in Mindful Awareness, yoga and meditation in the context of a retreat designed to learn skills to work with patients in a clinical setting, as well as in the context of work/life balance and self care. Students will come away from the study abroad with a certificate from Thanyapura Mind Centre Certificate in Yoga and Mindfulness Training for Psychologists Faculty Led Study Abroad studyabroad@thechicagoschool.edu

  5. Course Instruction • ARRIVE 4/29- Depart 5/7 Phuket, Thailand • Amanpuri Resort Villas • Assignment, readings, activities-syllabus • Pre-post departure survey requirement Faculty Led Study Abroad studyabroad@thechicagoschool.edu

  6. Travel • Students will arrange their own airfare from LA to Phuket. Suggestions for airport transfers will be discussed 1st class • Amanpuri Resort Villa with chef, and house staff • Personal time will be built into itinerary • Specifics- no spouses, must be in good physical condition, yoga and body work 1-2x per day. • We will take shuttle each morning to Thanyapuri Mind Center for Lecture/yoga. • Lunch back at Villa, afternoon theory and practice session or cultural tours/free time • Visas, immunizations not needed Faculty Led Study Abroad studyabroad@thechicagoschool.edu

OBJECTIVES FOR COURSE • To present an intellectual overview of: • Mindfulness meditation • Insight practice • The varieties of practice in different Eastern traditions, (Tibetan, Burmese, Thai, Zen) • Review how these traditions have shifted in meeting Western students • To explore the application of mindfulness to the profession of psychology in a clinical setting • To guide & engage participants in their own immersive, personal, experiential practice of mindfulness and insight meditation with a two-fold focus: • Benefit to self in maintaining work/life balance • To benefit the client/patient – those with and with-out prior experience • To present an opportunity to engage in mindful yoga practices • To deepen the grounded awareness of the body, feelings and breath

OBJECTIVES (CONT.) • To support the development of focused awareness or Mindfulness in movement • Students will identify basic concepts and issues in the theoretical foundations of Mindfulness and its practice • Students will demonstrate capacity for critical thinking with respects to concepts and issues underlying professional practice; • Students will identify historic origins and paths of development within the current field of psychology/psychotherapy/marriage and family therapy in their diversity across cultures • Students will demonstrate capacity to integrate historical and cross-cultural data into an understanding of professional roles, activities, and contexts.

  11. On Your Own Expenses and Combined Total Study Abroad International Program Fee$2,260.00: Covers the cost of lodging, all meals: breakfasts, lunches, dinners, program administrative costs, and some tours. Combined Total: $3,960.00

  13. ITINERARY (SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT PROFESSORS DISCRETION) • Two on ground pre-departure classes to be held in Westwood MANDATORY • Day 1: Phuket arrivals 4/29 • Welcome. Basic Professional Introductions and overview. Review goals for the overall study abroad Explore historic and cultural Thailand. Group cultural dinner/ outing into town

DAY 2 4/30 Yoga/Introduction to Shamatha Practice • An overview of contemplative psychology and practice and its application in the therapeutic setting; eudemonia. • 9:00-11:00--Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga: Breathing technique Using dristi (gaze) to aid awareness Basic postures • 11:00-12:00 Introduction to Shamatha -- Mindfulness of Breathing (belly and nostrils); Discussion/Q&A • 12:00-12:30 Four Immeasurables Practice • 1:00-3:00 Lunch • 3:00-6:00 Lecture on the history of meditation, styles and clinical applications followed by meditation

DAY 3 5/1 Yoga/Shamatha #2 (Mindfulness of Breathing) • Learning to listen to the experience of body rather than placing demands or expectations on it; using body as a tool for awareness and healing; learning to read posture as an aid to diagnosis and treatment planning • Relaxation as a foundation for attention; tuning into feelings using the breath; using breath as a tool for awareness and healing; how to read and address clients needs through observing breathing patterns. • 9:00-10:30--Guided Ashtanga yoga: Breathing Movement • 10:30-11:00-- Mindfulness of breathing meditation (full body awareness). • 11:30-12:00--Discussion/Q&A • 12:00-12:30 – Four Immeasurables Practice • 1:00-3:00 lunch • 3:00- 6:00 Lecture on practical daily awareness followed by meditation

DAY 4 5/2 Yoga/Shamatha #3 (Settling the Mind in Its Natural State) • Slowing down enough to identify patterns of mind; using awareness practice as a tool for identifying and healing destructive thought patterns; how to help clients identify recurrent patterns through awareness practice. • 9:00-10:30 Guided Ashtanga yoga: Breathing Movement • 10:30-11:00 Samatha: “Settling the Mind in Its Natural State” and Its Direct Application to a Therapeutic Setting • 11:00-12:00 Discussion/Q&A • 12:00-12:30 Four Immeasurables Practice • 1:00-3:00 Lunch • 3:00-6:00 Lecture on emotional awareness followed by meditation

DAY 5 5/3 Yoga/Vipassana #1: Mindfulness of Body • 9:00-10:30--Guided Ashtanga yoga: Breathing Movement • 10:30-11:00 Guided meditation: Body Scan • 11:00-12:00 Discussion/Q&A/Role plays • 12:00-12:30 Four Immeasurables Practice • 1:00-3:00 Lunch • 3:00-6:00 Lecture on the causes of human suffering followed by meditation

DAY 6 5/4 Yoga/Vipassana #2: Mindfulness of Mind • Applying mindfulness and awareness techniques to daily life; learning to shift perspective by looking from a larger view; using awareness practice as a tool for identifying and healing negative lifestyle patterns; how to help clients identify destructive patterns through awareness practice • 9:00-10:30Guided Ashtanga yoga: Breathing Movement • 10:30-11:00 Guided sitting meditation • 11:00-12:00 Brief overview of therapeutic programs that include mindfulness component (MBSR; MBCT; DBT). Discussion/Q&A/Role plays. • 12:00-12:30 Four Immeasurables Practice • 1:00-3:00 Lunch • 3:00-6:00 Walking tour to authentic Thai locations and interacting with the locals to understand the diversity in their cultures and religions

  19. DAY 7 5/5 • Cultural activity: Temple Tour, cultural immersion and tour meeting Thai people and their cultures. • Group dinner • De-brief/prepare for journey back to America

  22. COURSE REQUIREMENTS • 1-attendance and participation 50% • 2-reflection and experience journal photos and video included 20% • 3- mindfully donate time to 1 day service of charitable work 10% • 4- presentation to class of reading material 20%
