SCIENCE 6TH GRADE MRS. MARITES L. DE LUNA October 29- November 1, 2013 Light and The Electromagnetic Spectrum Eye Structure
QUICK QUESTIONS : TUESDAY • 1. The 3 major parts of the ear are : _____,______,_______. • 2. Sound waves travel best in a _______medium. • 3. In a solid, sound travel best because its particles are ________ to each other. • 4. The nerve connecting the ear to the brain is called ________. • 5. The bones in our ears amplify sounds that we hear. (T/F)
QUICK QUESTIONS : WEDNESDAY • 1. The 3 bones of the ear which amplifies sound are : • 2. The 2 things that sound need to happen are : • 3. Sound waves are transverse waves (T/F) • 4. The snail-like structure of the ear which contains fluids is the _______. • 5. Give one example of visible light.
QUICK QUESTIONS : THURSDAY • 1. The part of the ear that amplifies sound are the _______, _______ and ________. • 2. The ear structure that transmits electrical impulses to the brain is the ________. • 3. The nerve connecting the ear to the brain is called ________. • 4. Another term for loudness is _______. • 5. Another term for pitch is __________.
QUICK QUESTIONS : FRIDAY • 1. The higher the pitch the ______ the frequency of sound. • 2. Low pitched sounds release less energy and don’t go far in the cochlea. (t/f) • 3. Another term for loudness is ________. • 4. ________ speeds up communication to the brain. • 5. What is the function of the 3 bones in our ears?
Goals : 6.P.1.2 (Essential Standard) • By the end of the week, I can : • 1. Explain the relationship among visible light, the electromagnetic spectrum and sight. • 2.. identify various parts of the eye and their functions. • 3. tell what visible light is. • 4. tell the meaning of electromagnetic spectrum • 5. Compare and contrast reflection from refraction. • 6. work in centers dealing with light waves.
HOMEWORK (WEEK OF October 29-November 1, 2013) • 1. How can you see different colors? • 2. What is the relationship between light and sight? • 3. Compare and contrast reflection from refraction. • 4. Explain what the electromagnetic spectrum is .
VOCABULARY WORD: Monday • EYE - Eyes are the organs of vision. They detect light and convert it into electro-chemical impulses in neurons sending messages to the brain. • Sentence . • The human eye is the organ which gives us the sense of light, allowing us to learn more about the surrounding world than any of the other five senses.
INTERESTING IDEA • SCIENCE MAGIC/TRICK

NEW CONCEPT : Monday • Something can be "seen" when light waves emitted or reflected by it enter the eye. Human eyes respond to only a narrow range of wavelengths of electromagnetic waves-visible light. Differences of wavelength within that range are perceived as differences of color. Light travels in transverse waves.
NEW CONCEPT : TUESDAY • Light is a form of energy emitted by the Sun as well as light-producing objects on Earth. Light can be absorbed or reflected by objects depending upon the properties of the object and the type and angle of light when it hits the object. Some materials scatter light and others allow light rays to pass through, but refract the light by changing its speed.
New Concept : THE HUMAN EYE • The structure of the human eye can detect many colors in visible light that are reflected by objects
LEARNING CENTERS • 1 – Virtual Lab on Light • 2 – Reflection and Refraction • 3 – Color Filters • 4 - Virtual cow eye dissection • 5 – Prism and Kaleidoscopes • Students, make sure that by Friday, you have visited all learning centers.
EXPECTATIONS FOR LEARNING CENTERS • All groups should work cooperatively and harmoniously with each other. • Each member of the group should contribute to the assigned project/experiment. • Answer all analysis questions at the back of the paper • MAKE SURE THAT YOUR GROUP will work AS QUIETLY as possible. You are allowed to communicate but lower your tone so as not to disturb others. • No group hopping. Just stay with your group!
POST LAB DISCUSSION • DISCUSS AND SHARE VARIOUS GROUP RESULTS • ANSWER THE ANALYSIS QUESTIONS
Recording data (Mondays) • Test scores will be distributed. • Test scores will be recorded by both teacher and students. • Students will use a data sheet that will be given by the teacher to track their scores on every test, homework, classwork, laboratory work submitted in class. • Students will learn how to track down their progress in the Science class.
Back Page of Data Sheet ( Line Graph • Example : • S • C • O • R • E • S (y-axis) test # (x-axis)
INCREASING SCIENCE LITERACY • READING PASSAGE
MSL QUESTION • Which is true about the relationship between light and the electromagnetic spectrum? • a. Visible light travels slower than the rest of the electromagnetic spectrum. • b. Visible light has more energy than the rest of the electromagnetic spectrum. • c. Visible light is only part of the electromagnetic spectrum that can be detected by the human eye. • d. Visible light is the only part of the electromagnetic spectrum that can travel through space.
