  1. SCIENCE 6TH GRADE MRS. MARITES L. DE LUNA November 5-7, 2013 Light and The Electromagnetic Spectrum

  2. QUICK QUESTIONS : TUESDAY • 1. The 3 major parts of the ear are : _____,______,_______. • 2. Sound waves travel best in a _______medium. • 3. In a solid, sound travel best because its particles are ________ to each other. • 4. The nerve connecting the ear to the brain is called ________. • 5. The bones in our ears amplify sounds that we hear. (T/F)

  3. QUICK QUESTIONS : WEDNESDAY • 1. The bending of light is called ________. • 2. The bouncing of light is called _______. • 3. Dark colors absorb light easily than lighter colors. (T/F). • 4. Visible light has many colors (T/F) • 5. _______ energy is another term for light energy.

  4. QUICK QUESTIONS : THURSDAY • 1. We see colors because other colors are absorbed while the other colors are ________ into our eyes. • 2. White light is composed of all the colors of the rainbow. (T/F) • 3. Red has the _________wavelengths and bends the least. • 4. _________ has the shortest wavelengths and bends the most. • 5. _________ is when light waves enter a substance and change into other forms of energy.

  5. QUICK QUESTIONS:FRIDAY • 1. White color absorbs light. (T/F) • 2. Black color reflects light . (T/F) • 3. The white part of the eye which protects it is called _______. • 4. The part of the eye that gives its color is the __________. • 5. The part of the eye that covers it is the _______.

  6. Goals : 6.P.1.2 & 6.P.3.1 (Essential Standard) • By the end of the week, I can : • 1. know what heat energy is. • 2. Illustrate the transfer of heat energy from warmer objects to cooler ones using examples of conduction, radiation, and convection • 3. Compare and contrast conduction, radiation, and convection • 4. Review the relationship among visible light, the electromagnetic spectrum and sight. • 5. work in centers dealing with light waves.

  7. HOMEWORK (WEEK OF NOVEMBER 5-7, 2013) • STUDY FOR YOUR UNIT TEST SCHEDULED ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2013. COVERAGE : WAVES, LIGHT AND SOUND ENERGY, EAR AND EYE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONS. • Watch the discovery ed link using your username and password on Heat on the Move • http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/assetGuid/699e0dca-df54-4ce6-8198-b28c310313cd

  8. VOCABULARY WORD : TUESDAY • HEAT – is the transfer of energy from objects at a higher temperature to objects at a lower temperature • Sentence. Heat is measured by temperature, either Celsius or Fahrenheit. It is another term for thermal energy.

  9. NEW CONCEPT : TUESDAY • Energy can be transferred from one system to another (or from a system to its environment) in different ways: • thermally, when a warmer object is in contact with a cooler one mechanically, when two objects push or pull on each other over a distance • electrically, when an electrical source such as a battery or generator is connected in a complete circuit to an electrical device • by electromagnetic waves.

  10. New concept : Tuesday • Thermal energy is transferred through a material by the collisions of atoms within the material. Heat flows through materials or across space from warm objects to cooler objects, until both objects are at equilibrium.

  11. VOCABULARY WORD : WEDNESDAY • Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy between particles of matter that are touching. When energetic particles collide with nearby particles, they transfer some of their thermal energy. • Sentence - Conduction is usually faster in liquids and certain solids than in gases.

  12. NEW CONCEPT : WEDNESDAY • Heat travels through solids, primarily by conduction. Heat is circulated in fluids, both liquids and gases, through the process of convection. Radiation is energy that travels across distances in the form of electromagnetic waves.

  13. Vocabulary word : Thursday :convection Convectionis the transfer of thermal energy by particles moving through a fluid.

  14. NEW CONCEPT : THURSDAY • Over time, thermal energy tends to spread out through a material and from one material to another if they are in contact (conduction). Thermal energy can also be transferred by means of currents in air, water, or other fluids (convection).

  16. INTERESTING IDEA • SCIENCE MAGIC/TRICK

  17. LEARNING CENTERS • 1 – Virtual Lab on Light • 2 – Reflection and Refraction • 3 – Color Filters • 4 - Virtual cow eye dissection • 5 – Prism and Kaleidoscopes • Students, make sure that by Friday, you have visited all learning centers.

  18. EXPECTATIONS FOR LEARNING CENTERS • All groups should work cooperatively and harmoniously with each other. • Each member of the group should contribute to the assigned project/experiment. • Answer all analysis questions at the back of the paper • MAKE SURE THAT YOUR GROUP will work AS QUIETLY as possible. You are allowed to communicate but lower your tone so as not to disturb others. • No group hopping. Just stay with your group!

  19. ACTUAL LAB PERFORMANCE

  20. POST LAB DISCUSSION • DISCUSS AND SHARE VARIOUS GROUP RESULTS • ANSWER THE ANALYSIS QUESTIONS

  21. Recording data (Mondays) • Test scores will be distributed. • Test scores will be recorded by both teacher and students. • Students will use a data sheet that will be given by the teacher to track their scores on every test, homework, classwork, laboratory work submitted in class. • Students will learn how to track down their progress in the Science class.

  22. Back Page of Data Sheet ( Line Graph • Example : • S • C • O • R • E • S (y-axis) test # (x-axis)

  23. INCREASING SCIENCE LITERACY • READING PASSAGE
