Transformative Assessment Project Next Steps Consultation with CNI Fall 2003 Task Force Meeting Attendees
Session objectives • Share information on the Transformative Assessment Project/our perspective on assessment • Understand the landscape a bit from other attendees’ perspectives • Consult with attendees on potential next steps for TAP
Introductions • Could you tell us your name, institution, and • a little bit about an institutional assessment project you are working on • OR what interested you in this session (what you were hoping to gain by participating)?
NLII – Initiative of EDUCAUSE Mission – use technology to enable • Education that is . . . • Active and Learner-Centered • Dynamic & Lifelong • Collaborative • Cost Effective • Accessible • High Quality For more information, see http://www.educause.edu/nlii
Transformative Assessment Project • Three-year project • Partnership of NLII, TLT Group, CNI, WSU, AAHE • Designed to: • elicit new ideas about assessment practices and systems that will transform teaching and learning • help institutions of higher education put these ideas into action • See: http://www.educause.edu/nlii/keythemes/transformative.asp
Purpose of TAP Create tools to support teams from institutions that • are involved in significant institutional improvement of teaching and learning with technology; • use assessment in a variety of ways to guide and support that effort; • share a commitment to the purposeful application of assessment and dissemination of assessment results to support deep change.
Your turn again Share an assessment a-ha, or high point (most successful, most engaged, most clear about purpose)– for current, past or even future (imagined) project
The TAP “a-ha’s” – the key questions • What is transformation? • How does it comes about? • What is the relationship between assessment & transformation? • What are some effective strategies for developing a transformative assessment program? • What are some processes for developing such a program?
What is transformation? • Emergent from institutional vision, mission, culture & context • Focused on learning outcomes, processes and purposes (honors learners & learning) • Qualitative • Large-scale, systemic, contagious & catalytic • Enabled by the intelligent and appropriate use of technology • Informed by assessment & a commitment to data-driven decision-making
What is transformation, cont. • Based upon iterative, collaborative generation and refinement of an institutional conceptual framework that articulates and communicates a shared institutional understanding
Conceptual framework • Expresses an authentic institutional mission with regard to teaching and learning • Reflects faculty educational values informed by the science of learning • Articulates the relationships among learning, teaching, course/program/service development, application of technology, and institutional and community organization
