What is Community Psychology? • Relationship of individuals with communities and societies • By integrating research with action, it aims to understand and enhance the quality of life for individuals, communities and societies • Guided by core values: • Individual and family wellness • Sense of community • Respect for human diversity • Social justice • Citizen participation • Collaboration and community strengths • Empirical grounding (Dalton, Elias, and Wandersman, 2006)

What is Healthcare Reform? Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) Passed March 23, 2010
Healthcare Reform and Community Psychology National • Establishes a fund for prevention and public health programs • Addresses health disparities • Provides incentives for the prevention of chronic disease in Medicaid • Creates a task force to review effectiveness of community interventions • Provides training in cultural competency and health literacy • Creates a plan for a public-private partnership for a prevention and health promotion outreach campaign to raise public awareness of health improvement across the lifespan.
Healthcare Reform and Community Psychology State • Requires States to conduct needs assessment for communities with high-risk populations and prevalence of social problems Local • Community Transformation Grants for the implementation, evaluation and dissemination of evidence-based community preventive health activities Individual • Coverage of preventive health services without co-payment • Coverage of annual wellness visits and personalized prevention plans
Healing Culture Defined • A culture that recognizes the multi-faceted nature of patient well-being(including physical, emotional, spiritual, social, environmental and community levels), and whose staff work in partnership with patients and their families for healing. • Healing is defined as more than recovery from illness or injury; it is allowing a patient to reach his or her optimal health, with a focus on prevention and health promotion.
Enabling our Healing Culture • The expression of our Mission and Values is enabled through a Healing Culture in which we: • Share responsibility with patients, families, and the community; • Demonstrate respect for diversity through cultural competence; • Embrace synergies among physical, emotional and spiritual healing connections; • Recognize optimal well-being, prevention and health promotionas integral parts of the healing process.

An Invitation to Craft Our Healing Culture We want to get the best thinking from all levels of the organization, and to tap into the energies of those in the Atlantic family who have a passion for a healing culture, we ask that you invite a partner, preferably someone in a line staff or patient contact position to collaborate on your recommendations and to join us at this event. We will meet monthly through the rest of 2011 at a time and place most accommodating to the majority of our members.
