Role of Information Systems • Major role: To provide effective support of a company’s strategies for gaining competitive advantage. • Strategic role: To develop products, services, and capabilities using IT that give a company major advantages over the competitive forces
Competitive Forces (Michael Porter) • Business that wants to succed must develop and implement strategies to effectively counter: • The rivalry of competitors within industry • The threat of new entrants into an industry and its market • The threat posed by substitute products which might capture market share • The bargaining power of customers • The bargaining power of suppliers
Competitive Strategies (1) • Cost Leadership • Becoming low-cost producer • Finding way to help its supplier or customer reduce their cost • Differentiation • Differentiate product/service from competitors’ • Focus in particular segments or niches of a market
