About JSTOR • Originally conceived by William G. Bowen, President of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 1994 • Established as an independent not-for-profit organization in August 1995 • Initially a pilot project (University of Michigan) to provide electronic access to the backfiles of ten journals in two core fields, economics and history
About JSTOR • Reliable and comprehensive archive of important scholarly journal literature • Archival content only – “moving wall” for most journals • Focus on the social sciences and humanities

Basic Search Basic Search • Multiple search terms on the same line are interpreted as a phrase • Not case-sensitive • Boolean operators available: • and, or, near (10 words), near (25 words) • You can search in full-text, author, abstract & titlesections(Note: Only about 10% of articles in JSTOR have abstracts)
