  1. Temple GrandinEmergence: Labeled Autistic by: Temple Grandin & Margaret M. Scariano PowerPoint By: Cassidy Donahue

  2. Introduction • Temple was born in Boston, MA on August 29th, 1947. I chose Temple Grandin because, she is a hero to so many people. She is most famous for inventing a squeeze chute which calms cattle and being a recovered Autistic.

  3. What Is Autism? • Autism is something that effects the way a person’s brain works. • Temple was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome • Asperger’s Syndrome is a form of high-functioning Autism. It effects a person’s social skills. Sometimes, it boosts their intelligence level.

  4. Childhood - 6 months- Stiffened up when her mom held her • Age 2- Diagnosed with brain damage • 1950 (Age 3)- “Labeled Autistic”, diagnosed with Autism • Didn’t talk until she was 3 ½ • Age 3- Went to Neurologist and scored +9 on Rimland Checklist Between Grades 3 and 4 - Went to camp for 1st time- “Camp Swanee” • Grade 5- Became involved in making costumes for the play at her school

  5. Adolescent • Enjoyed watching “Twilight Zone” on TV. • Liked reading science fiction • Intrigued with designing model airplanes • Age 11- Elected to the assembly committee-she was the “policeman” • Age 13- Expelled from school due to her temper tantrums • After being expelled, she went to Mountain Country Day School in Vermont • Age 15- Found out about her diagnosis • Had an anxious nervous system • Going on a VERY fast ride at an amusement park helped her calm her nervous system • Summer after Junior year in high school- Went to her aunt’s ranch, where she used a squeeze chute for the first time. • 1966- Graduated from Mountain Country Day School

  6. Adulthood • Went to 3 colleges: • Franklin Pierce (1970- BA Psychology),Arizona State University (1975-Animal Science),University of Illinois (1989- Animal Science). • She invented a squeeze chute which calms cattle when they go through the slaughter house • She’s a doctor of Animal Science at Colorado State University • Temple isn’t currently married and she doesn’t have any kids • Temple Grandin is a recovered Autistic

  7. Harry S. Truman was president in 1947, the year Temple was born. He served from 1945-1953.

  8. Contributions • Temple invented a squeeze chute which calms cattle when they go through the slaughter house. • Her work can be found all over the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, England, and Denmark. • She is a hero to many people, whether they have this diagnosis or not.

  9. What I Learned • I learned a lot of interesting things about Temple. The most interesting things I learned are how she became a recovered Autistic, and how she invented the squeeze chute. I didn’t know becoming a recovered Autistic was even possible. Apparently it is. I think her squeeze chute is awesome. Things like that can be used to calm people with anxious nervous systems. A lot of kids with Autism have anxious nervous systems, so this must really help them.

  10. “Interview” • If I could ask her 3 questions, I would ask her: • How hard was it growing up with Autism? • How did you react when you found out about your diagnosis? • When you were a kid, did you ever think you would get to be as successful as you are today?

  11. Bibliography • Scariano, T. G. (1986). Emergence: Labeled Autistic. Novato,CA: Academic Therapy Publications.
