  2. Objectives • Identify benefits of developing a strong student veteran • organization • Discussways to develop and enhance student veteran organizations • Explore potential partnerships between student • affairs, academic services, and student veteran • associations

Theories • Transition • Schlossberg- Marginality and Mattering • The larger the difference between the new role and the former role, the more marginal the student may feel, especially if there are no norms for the new role. • Transition process • “moving in”, “moving through”, and “moving out” • Create environments that clearly indicate to students that they matter • Student Engagement • Kuh et al., 2008 • Student engagement with educational purpose and intentionality positively speaks to academic success and persistence. • Curricular and co-curricular collaborations • Peers are influential in the learning process and may help reinforce academic expectations. • Adult Learning • Lundberg - Adult Student Learning: A Causal Model • Peer relationships helped productivity in the classroom • Improve quality of relationships between administrators and adult students • Student learning enhanced through peer learning

  5. Basic Factors to Remember • Gauge student interest • Identify protocol for the establishment of student organizations on your campus • Establish a relationship with the office responsible for Veteran care on campus • Identify a potential advisor

  6. ACTIVITY • Identify two barriers • Explain why it happens • Offer solution(s) • Leadership • Funding • Membership • Campus support • Participation • Organizational goals • Partnerships

  7. Solutions for Enhancements • Define goals and mission • Create a listserv • Partnerships with community veteran organizations • Mentoring programs
