Wind Energy Tax Credit Renewal
What is it? • The tax credit is a gov’t subsidy • 2.2 cents per kilowatt hour (kwh) • Average wind turbine produces 2.4- 4 million kwh a year • Average household uses 10,000 kwh annually
The Issue • Governor Mitt Romney against renewing the tax credit. • Claims that it distorts markets. • Wind energy companies have received the subsidy started in the 1990’s • Wouldn’t stand on their own
The Industry • Boosts rural economies. • Have lost over 1,000 jobs already • Could potentially lose 37,000 • Clean Renewable Energy • Coal: $3.17 billion in 2007 • All renewables: $5.39 billion in 15 years
Mediation • The industry is still young for mass energy production • Very efficient renewable energy that will lead us to energy independence • The Tax Credit needs to be renewed to keep the industry going
