WEA work in Y&H region in partnership Local community centres eg Ravensthorpe, Crosland Moor, Hill House Schools eg Cawley Lane, Birkby Infants, Reinwood, Crow Lane, Fixby J&I Children’s Centres eg Batley East and Central, Rawthorpe, Dewsbury Moor, Chickenley & Earlsheaton, Savile Town Workplace providers and Trade unions Museums and Libraries

  3. Priorities Below level 2 qualifications Disadvantaged post code areas In receipt of means tested benefits Mental health/ disability issues BME communities Progress to lit/ num/ accreditation Building profile of social purpose education Developing volunteers and learning champions

  4. WEA deliver a wide variety of adult education engagement courses in Y&H region, usually short and unaccredited: • Family learning e.g., Practical Parent Helpers, Crafts for Families, Helping in Schools NCFE L2 • Arts & crafts e.g. Mehndi, sewing, banner making • Health & wellbeing e.g. Aromatherapy, Personal Well Being, Reflexology

  5. Skills for Life in WEA Offer free courses to eligible learners: • Literacy • Numeracy • ESOL All accredited: • Entry 1 to 3 City & Guilds • Level 1 & 2 OCR Course length usually 20 – 40 hours per term

Skills for Life in WEA Courses currently offered in Kirklees at: • Staincliffe Children’s Centre, Batley: Literacy • Batley Children’s Centre: Literacy & Numeracy • Ravensthorpe Community Centre, Dewsbury: Literacy & Numeracy • Support to Recovery, Dewsbury: Literacy • Crosland Moor Community Centre, Hudd: Literacy • Birkby Infants, Hudd: Numeracy

Skills for Life in WEA ESOL courses currently offered in Kirklees at: • Hillhouse Community Resource Centre, Birkby • Reinwood Infants, Huddersfield • Cawley Lane Junior School, Heckmondwike • Taleem Centre, Dewsbury • Crossland Moor Children’s Centre (January) • Soothilll Coomunity Centre (November) • Batley Central Children’s Centre (November)

  9. What Learners Did Organised a protest against the ESOL Funding Cuts: • Learnt about the issues • Wrote to their MP • Organised a Protest

  10. Benefits for Learners • ‘real life’ opportunity to practise English • chance for collaborative group learning • autonomy • independence • CONFIDENCE • knowledge that they can make a difference (Government U-turn)
