Strength training is a form of physical exercise that utilizes resistance to build strength, endurance, and muscle size. It offers various benefits such as improved bone and joint function, reduced injury potential, increased metabolism, and better overall health. This training is suitable for all athletes, as it can be tailored to their specific sport and requirements. However, it should be approached with caution, as inadequate technique or training at a lesser fitness level can lead to injury. Joining a gym or purchasing equipment may incur additional costs.

Description • Strength training is a type of physical exercise specializing in the use of resistance to induce muscular contraction which builds strength, anaerobic endurance, and size of skeletal muscles. • When properly formed, strength training can provide significant functional benefits and improvement in overall health and well-being, including increased bone, muscle, tendon and ligament strength and ligament strength and toughness, improved joint function, reduced potential for injury, increased bone density, increased metabolism, increased fitness, improved cardiac function, and improved lipoprotein lipid profiles, including elevated good cholesterol.
Type of athletes who use strength training All athletes use strength training as a part of their training program whether amateur or professional as it can increase performance and prevent injury. Strength training can be used by all athletes because it can be specific to their sport and their sports requirements.
Advantages • Helps keeps weight off • Protects bone health and muscle mass • Makes you stronger and fitter • Develops better body mechanics • Attempts to prevent lifestyle disease • Increases bone density • Boosts energy levels • Increases metabolism
Disadvantages • Not recommended for athletes of a lesser fitness level • Inadequate technique may be dangerous to athletes of lesser experience • Need a spotter • Injury if done incorrectly • Gym membership/equipment may be expensive
How does this training affect performance • Strength training can improve performance by allowing the muscles to go through hypertrophy, which is the process of muscle building. If the muscles are to get larger this allows the athlete to carry more functional weight, with weight comes strength and can even achieve greater explosive power used in sports such as American Football, helping the players to run faster, jump higher, and hit harder. Strength training also increases anaerobic strength endurance/stamina to sustain explosive all out effort over and over again during a game.
