  1. Fresh/Saltwater Fish By Sara Babakioff

  2. Causes of Death • Water pollution/toxic wastes • Over fishing • Global Warming

  3. Types of Water Pollution • Oil spills, nitrogen, phosphorous, untreated sewage, fertilizer, mining residue, and plastic waste are all examples of pollution that is toxic to fish.

  4. Lethal Incident in China! • On August 29th, Yongcheng County opened a sluice to release water contaminated with both sewage and industrial waste into the ocean which was stored for a long period of time • 450,000 fish died

  5. Over Fishing • Off sets the natural food chain • The whole ecosystem becomes degraded • Not enough adult fish can find mates so there’s not enough breeding • Ultimately reduces populations drastically to the point of no recovery

  6. Reasons for Over fishing • The government doesn’t intervene • Too much profit is involved • More jobs available to people

  7. Global Warming • Climate change will force fish to relocate in colder regions up North • This will effect the ecosystem balance, fisheries and the crucial food source for countries and marine life • Since there’s more fish now in Arctic regions, there’s an increase of fishing there • Stunting the growth of deep water fish by 30% from 50 years ago

  8. Death due to pollution

  9. What we can do to help: • Reduce your ecological footprint! • Never pour toxic substances down the drain • Use Non toxic substances • Buy fish that have the lowest impact • Educate others!

  10. The Aftermath • Over the past half-century, the world's annual fish catch has risen from 18 tonnes to 95 tonnes • Much of the fish we consume now are poisoned by pollutants • We are losing species of fish and other marine life
