Sentara Healthcare’s Incentive-Based Health, Wellness & Prevention Program Employees rewarded for participating in wellness program by receiving insurance premium discounts and those with chronic diseases received additional discounts for working with a health coach. RESULTS = Positive ROI Over Time 2007-2009 Sentara saved $3.4 million; for ever $1 spent to incentivize Sentara saved $6 2010-2012 Risk factors significantly reduced in participants; Costs vs. Trends much lower than estimated.

Mission: Health Participation & Results • Participation • Launched to all 11,200 benefits-eligible Sentara employees in 2009-2012 • Results • Of the 4,626 employees who answered all 5 risk factor questions (BMI, weight, blood pressure, exercise, tobacco use) for all 5 years and had modifiable risk factors: • 2,726 decreased risk levels • 1,553 maintained risk levels • 652 increased risk levels • The REAL Story • The most important outcome is the difference Mission: Health has made in people’s lives. Employees have lost weight, stopped smoking, started exercising and feel better about themselves.
Healthy @ Work Program A reward program designed to encourage employees to engage in their own health by completing a Personal Health Assessment (PHA) to gauge their health risks and develop programs to assist those at greatest risk. RESULTS 71 groups earned discount with 48% of the 1,378 members having 2 or more risk factors (weight, smoking, high blood pressure) that would not have been previously identified and addressed. • Alternative for small businesses who can’t afford big ticket incentive programs. • Opportunity for businesses to earn 10% premium discount at next renewal by encouraging 50% participation in completing PHA. • Engages employees in their own health with simple and easy-to-use programs.
