  2. Howit all started • Emperor Karlo VI. ruledAustriaandHungary at thebeginingofthe 18th century. Hisdaughter Marija Terezija came to the Habsburg throne. TheCroatsandtheHungarianssupported her to becomethe Queen ofAustria, Hungaryand Croatia. Sheruled for 40 years(1740. – 1780.). Herson Josip II. ruledfrom 1780. – 1790.

  3. Turkishwave • Late inthe 17th centuryaftertheTurkisharmywasdefeated at thebattleatWienin 1683. a lotofpeoplefromBosnia, Serbia, Austria (40%) andHungarymovedto Downtown. Theyfounded a settlementcalled Donja Varoš.

  4. Inhabitants • At thebeginingofthe 18th centurytherewere 1200 inhabitants. Primaryschoolwasattendedbyabout 50 pupils. In 1737 therewere about 2500 residentsand about 452 homes.

  5. CatholicChurch • CatholicpopulationbuilttheChurchin 1714. TheChurchoftheblessednameofVirginMarywasconsecratedin 1732. Therewasonly one nave. Afterthatitwasexpended. ThefirstChaplainwas Matija Vucić(1706. – 1714.). Themainaltarwasdedicated to VirginMary. Laterin 1762 thetowerwasbuiltwithfourbellswhichwere 350 killosheavy. Thebiggestbellwas 60 killosheavy. In 1754 therewas a fencedgraveyardaroundtheChurch.

  6. St. RoccoChapel • In 1744, residentsof Donja Varoš built a beautifulbaroquechapelSaintRocco. It is a votiveChurch. St. Rocco is a patron saintofplague.Therewas a monument builtacrossthe street whichwasalsodedicated to plague. ThehouseofIgnjatKragujevićwasbuiltthe same year. Ithasbeenrestoredandnowit’s a historical monument.

  7. CatholicandOrthodoxChurch • In 1750 OrthodoxChurchwasbuilt (Crkva Uspenije Presvete Bogorodice – ChurchoftheAssumptionoftheVirginMuses). The most famousDowntownGraveyardwasfirstmentionedin 1701. TheCatholicChapelwasbuiltin 1870. TheOrthodoxChapelwasbuiltin 1882.
