Welcome to the 16th GridPP Collaboration Meeting Introduction GridPP3 Project Leader GridPP3 Proposal Tier-2 Funding Timeline Steve Lloyd, Chair of the GridPP Collaboration Board
GridPP3 Project Leader Having done the job for 6 years Tony Doyle understandably did not wish to continue for a further 3 years (or more). A ‘Search Committee’ was set up by the CB to find a successor (Peter Dornan, Pete Watkins, John Womersley and SLL). There was one ‘obvious’ candidate and a couple of possibilities. As recently announced Dave Britton will be the GridPP3 Project Leader (subject to PPARC approval and suitable financial arrangements between PPARC, Dave and Imperial). Congratulations (or commiserations) Dave! GridPP16 Introduction

GridPP16 Introduction
Tier-2 Allocations • Take each experiment’s CPU and Disk requirements (from Dave Newbold) • For each experiment – share out among Tier-2s • For each Tier-2 share out among institutes • Sum over experiments (maintains the correct CPU/Disk ratio) Sharing guided by: • Size of local community (number of Ac/Ph/PP) • Past delivery (KSI2K to date, Disk usage last quarter) • Current resources available GridPP16 Introduction
Tier-2 ‘Shares’ ~35% ~35% ~10% ~20% GridPP16 Introduction
Example CMS Requirement in 2008 is1800 KSI2K and400 TB Tier-2 sharing matrix: (PMB/Tier-2 Board) (Part of) Institute sharing matrix: (Tier-2 Board) i.e Imperial ‘allocation’ is 1800 KSI2K (400 TB) x 0.75 x 0.9 = 1215 KSI2K (270 TB) GridPP16 Introduction
Crosscheck: GridPP16 Introduction
Hardware Costs (Agreed by CB) • Take requirement in following year 7560 divided by the lifetime in years (4.85 CPU, 3.9 Disk) = 1559 • Multiply by the unit cost in that year £0.392k/KSI2K = £612k • Similarly for disk. • Up to institutes how they spend it (new kit, replacement kit, power, central services … ) GridPP16 Introduction
Similar procedure used to allocate manpower (by the Tier-2 Board) Crosscheck: GridPP16 Introduction
Procedure • Dave Britton has sent an individual email to each PI with their manpower allocations (including MSN and other posts) plus their nominal hardware allocation (if they want it) • Each institute should apply for these resources via JeS • Preparing a further email about JeS details • We assume Hardware Support posts attract fEC • No explicit running costs (‘Can of Worms’) GridPP16 Introduction
