What is Worship???. What Worship is NOT:. Singing songs to God. Singing songs to God with your eyes closed. Singing songs to God with your eyes closed and your hands lifted in the air. A group of people singing songs to God with their eyes closed and hands lifted in the air.

What Worship is NOT: A group of people singing songs to God with their eyes closed and hands lifted in the air while a rockin’ band gives you goosebumps as they play a worship song you really, really like in a church equipped with a killer sound system and a computerized overhead system … with the lights dimmed THE POINT: The church often misunderstands worship just as the Samaritan women at the well did…

  4. What is Worship??? “Worship is interaction with God that is pleasing to Him” Romans 12:1 “Therefore I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship”

  5. What is Worship??? Six INGREDIANTS that worship REQUIRES in order to be fully acceptable by God: 1. SALVATION Jesus said “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me” (John 14:6) Worship is ETERNAL Salvation is REQUIRED for worship because the very thing we are SAVED from is ETERNAL SEPERATION from God.

SACRIFICE (something dies or is given up… something that was once there is no longer there) OLD covenant worship = Blood sacrifice (The law) NEW covenant worship = Jesus is the BLOOD sacrifice …but we are the LIVING sacrifice (Rom 12:1)

  7. What is Worship??? Six INGREDIANTS that worship REQUIRES: 2. SACRIFICE A sacrifice in itself is not enough, it must be PLEASING to God Cain vs. Able: Both offered a sacrifice to God. One was pleasing to God, the other was not. Why??? Why does God want sacrifice? … because he wants your OBEDIENCE… “To obey is BETTER than sacrifice” (I Sam 15:22)

  8. What is Worship??? Six INGREDIANTS that worship REQUIRES: • SALVATION 2. SACRIFICE 3. OBEDIENCE Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will OBEY my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (John 14:23)

  9. What is Worship??? Six INGREDIANTS that worship REQUIRES: 3. OBEDIENCE Example of Obedience: Abraham & Isaac (blessing = communion with God) Examples of Disobedience: Saul wiping out Amalekites David’s 1st move of the ark (consequence = separation from God)

  10. What is Worship??? Six INGREDIANTS that worship REQUIRES: 3. OBEDIENCE The fall of man was the FIRST act of disobedience (creation worship = complete obedience) Obedience is the opposite of SIN SIN is the OPPOSITE of obedience

  12. What is Worship??? Six INGREDIANTS that worship REQUIRES: 4. SEPERATION FROM SIN How does sin effect your worship?? “Out of the same mouth come praising and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?” (James 3:10-11)

Jesus said “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift” (Matthew 5:23-24) Separation from sin is required for worship because worship is relationship based, and sin inhibits our relationships

  14. What is Worship??? Six INGREDIANTS that worship REQUIRES: • SALVATION 2. SACRIFICE 3. OBEDIENCE 4. SEPERATION FROM SIN 5. CONSISTANCY Your worship suffers if you’re not consistent with your spiritual disciplines Your worship suffers if you’re not consistent during good times AND bad

EXPRESSION Singing, dancing, clapping, kneeling, bowing, lifting hands, speaking, being silent, praying, etc… Jesus said “Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Matt 12:34)
