  1. Homework Answers 8.) 2 26.) -8 – 3n = 19; n = -9 10.) 5 28.) -5 12.) 81 30.) -6.7 14.) -180 32.) 27.44 16.) -19 34.) They are the same 18.) -16 36.) x = 6 22.) 92 tons 24.) 32 – 9n= 140; n = -1

  2. 3.2 Solving Equations Having Like Terms and Parentheses 10-24-13

  3. Writing and Solving and Equation Your school’s basketball team is playing in the championship game. For the game, the cheerleaders want to buy a banner that costs $47. They also want to buy small items to give to students in the stands. Pompoms cost $5.20 each. Noisemakers cost $0.80 each. The cheerleaders have a total budget of $377 for the game. If they buy equal numbers of noisemakers and pompoms, how many can they afford to buy?

  4. 1.) Organize the information Banner $47 Pompoms $5.20 Noisemakers $0.80 Total budget $377 2.) Write a verbal model, let n=number of noisemakers and pompoms Cost of n poms + Cost of n noisemakers + Cost of banner = Total budget 3.) Substitute numbers in verbal model 5.20n + 0.80n + 47 = 377

  5. 5.20n + 0.80n + 47 = 377 Solve for n to find out how many pompoms and noisemakers the cheerleaders can buy. 1.) Combine like terms 6n + 47 = 377 2.) Subtract 47 from both sides 6n = 330 3.) Divide by 6 on both sides n = 55 The cheerleaders can buy 55 pompoms and 55 noisemakers.

  6. Solving Equations Using the Distributive Property 1.) -21 = 7(3 – x) -21 = 21 – 7x -42 = -7x 6 = x 2.) -3(8 – 4x) = 12 -24 + 12x = 12 12x = 36 x = 3

  7. Combining Like Terms After Distributing 5x – 2(x – 1) = 8 5x – 2x + 2 = 8 3x + 2 = 8 3x = 6 X = 2

  8. Practice Problems 1.) 3n – 40 + 2n = 15 n = 11 2.) 2(s – 1) = 6 s = 4 3.) 13 = 2y – 3(y + 4) y = -25
