What Does Reading Look Like in Kindergarten? • Guided reading: Working with the teacher to learn and apply reading strategies. See form: Word Solving Strategies • Allows the teacher to differentiate instruction to small group individual needs. • End year Goal: Students must independently read a level D text.
What are Sight Words? • Sight words are words that authors use frequently in a text. These words need to be recognized upon sight and should not be sounded out. I think of it as popcorn( pop out the word within 3 seconds)! • Sight word knowledge is EXTREMELY important in learning to read! • Sight words make up of 50% of words in a text.
What does English Language Arts look like? • Students work independently to practice skills • Students work in different groups • Word Work (letters, CVC words, blends, digraphs, parts of a sentence) • Writing (handwriting, writing sentences, writing stories etc) with Mrs. Fry • Guided Reading (with me) • Sight word (Getting familar with the sight word) • Technology • Listening/game
How Are Students Assessed in ELA? • PALS: Phonemic Awareness Literacy Screening • BAS: Benchmark Assessment System • Letter identification and sound recognition, • Writing Prompts
What Math Looks Like in the Classroom? • Whole group, fluency, partner games and work, independent practice • Big Goals: • Counting to 100 • One-to-One correspondence • Number recognition • Problem Solving and critical thinking
How are Students Assessed in Math? • AMC: Assessing Mathematical Concepts • Classroom Assessments
How are Kindergarteners Graded? • Report Cards: • Standard based report card • 4X a year • 1,2,3,4 • Look at the page title Understanding my report card • Parent conference October 14th
4 is for students who show knowledge of a topic that wasn’t necessarily taught and goes above the standard 3 Understands the material with few errors 2 They’re getting there 1 Not showing understanding of the standard
Homework • Packets will be sent home once a month. • They will review skills learned in class. • They can do it all at once or do a page a night.
How Can We Foster Independence? • Encourage your child to fasten/ tie his/her own clothing • Allow your child to be responsible for their own belongings • Backpacks • Lunchbox • Coat • Folder and homework! • Learn and Practice Personal Information • First and last name • Carpool Number/bus number
How Can We Communicate? • Daily: folders/PRIDE Sheets • Remind app (just like texting) • Email: groschba@staffordschools.net
