What is a structure? • A structure is something made of parts put together for a particular purpose.
Function and Form; two characteristics of structures The function of a structure refers to the task or purpose of a structure.
Form refers to the shape and physical appearance of a structure. Function is the main purpose of form … Shape – holds eggs so they cannot roll out; allows bird to nestle on eggs; keeps heat in. Texture – soft enough that eggs don’t break, insulation value, strong enough to withstand elements.
However, humans want their structures to look good, so form is about appearance in many cases as well. Back to the nest … Colour – camouflage!
Structures can be classified as solids, frames, or shells. Solids structures are objects that use solid construction to support loads.
A frame structure is a network of parts that supports loads.
A shell structure is a structure with a hollow, curved shape.
