  2. Background • Jehoshaphat was the 4th king of Judah who reigned, c. 872-848 B.C. (1 Kings 22:41-50; 2 Chron. 17:1 – 20:37) • There is an emphasis made in the life of this king on his right relationship with God (2 Chron. 17:1-6) • What can we learn from Jehoshaphat? We learn the importance of going to God first, before acting – Bible study and prayer first, before making decisions in life

  3. King of Jehovah’s Word • Jehoshaphat wanted the people to hear and learn from God first (2 Chron. 17:7-9) • Jehoshaphat wanted to hear from God before going to war (2 Chron. 18:4-7) • Jehoshaphat wanted the people to hear God’s judgment first in daily, personal matters (2 Chron. 19:4-11) • Jehoshaphat wanted to hear from God in prayer before going to war against Moab (2 Chron. 20:3,5,18,20,27)

  4. King of Jehovah’s Word • Jehoshaphat was rebuked only when he joined himself with man first, instead of with God (1 Kings 22:44; 2 Chron. 19:1-3; 20:35-37)

  5. Check With God First • This important principle is taught in the OT (Num. 9:6-8; 15:32-36) • This important principle is taught in the NT (Acts 15:24)

  6. Check With God First • When we want to know the plan of salvation • When we want to preach a sermon • When we want to plan the work and worship of the church • When we face temptations • When we are working out personal issues (M-D-R, conflict resolution)

  7. Check With God First • When we make important decisions in life (marriage, jobs, moving) • When we have to make priorities • When we check with man first, we will always have problems (Prov. 14:12; Jer. 10:23) • When we check with God first, we will always be blessed
