Our Situation Andhra Pradesh recently has been hit by a devastating flood. The most affected districts in Andhra Pradesh are Kurnool, Krishna, Guntur, Nalgonda and Mahaboobnagar. Over 1.3 million people are displaced from their homes. The official death toll is 199 people with 6,295 livestock that have also perished in the six districts. As many as 478 villages in 87 mandals have been severely hit in the last four days with the heaviest flooding that River Krishna has seen in more than a 100 years. 42,000 houses in Kurnool and 11,680 houses in MahaboobnagarGuntur District are severely affected. Millions of acres of agriculture which include paddy, cotton, turmeric, maize, chilly and many other commercial crops are also damaged. 10/6/2009 North America Telugu Society Inc. (NATS)
How Did This Happen? Because of the heavy rains in neighboring states, Karnataka and Maharashtra, the Krishna River has overflown and the Srisailam Dam was not able to take the excess flow thus water is backed and flooded nearby cities,Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar. Even after relieving some of the flow through the dam, the administration of Andhra Pradesh, who have never dealt with a natural disaster of this magnitude in a 100 years, cannot handle the scope of the flood damage and many river bank villages have gone without any help. 10/6/2009 North America Telugu Society Inc. Alternatives Considered The people that have been vacated in low laying areas through force by the AP government are now being told that there is no water, food, or clothes that are available to them. There are a few non profit organizations that have taken initiative to help the displaced but much more help is needed. Any donations of food, bottled water, clothes, blankets, towels, and shoes would be greatly appreciated. Air India has partnered with the Andhra Pradesh Flood Relief to ship cargo from the United States to India for free for this cause. For all people who want to donate, we will send FedEx labels to ship your items to the Florida Nats Office. 10/6/2009 North America Telugu Society Inc. (NATS)
Recommendations Please coordinate with friends and family to setup a collection point for donations and ship all items together if possible and they will be sent to the ultimate beneficiaries. NATS is currently working with Andhra Pradesh State Ring Relief Government and TV9 for the distribution. It will take 4 to 5 months for most people to get back to their normal way of life. Please help your brothers and sisters in the affected ares by moving as fast as possible to bring relief. 10/6/2009 North America Telugu Society Inc. (NATS)
