College of Science and Engineering • Assumptions to develop models: • Colleges can have departments and schools but schools cannot have departments • If we remain with a department model, we will have fewer and larger departments. • Schools will have a full-time director. Departments will have a chair. Program areas will have a coordinator. • Reassigned time for department chairs and program area coordinators will be consistent with the Inter Faculty Organization agreement. • Our new organizational structure must have a lower overall administrative cost. • Schools, departments and program areas should have a similar size and scale of operation, and support functions will be equitable distributed. • Visit: https://myscsu.stcloudstate.edu/sites/Reorganization/Documents/Academic%20Reorganization%20Scenarios%20and%20Discussion%20-%20Provost%20Malhotra%208-17-2010.pdf

College of Science and Engineering • The following are conversation starters, there may be many other questions and these will be collected during the course of discussions that will take place through the fall and beyond. • How does each model address the outcomes of: • improving organizational connectedness • facilitating inter- and multidisciplinary work and innovation • embedding flexibility and feedback loops into the system and structures • decreasing administrative overhead • Are we best served administratively by a 3, 4, or 5-college model? • What are the implications of these different models on the supervisory and evaluative functions? • Should degree programs be • housed within institutes • and centers? • Should rostering occur • within institutes & centers? • What is the appropriate • administrative oversight • for institutes and centers?
College of Science and Engineering We are not alone with our budgetary concerns See these links: “As signs of a tentative economic rebound hearten students and parents in states such as North Dakota and Arkansas, continuing high unemployment and state budget crises could lead to funding cuts to public colleges and universities in Nevada, Louisiana, Illinois, and many other states. Unless officials in troubled states find new tax dollars to support their colleges, administrators will have little choice but to impose hefty tuition increases or reduce the number of classes and services offered on campus…” www.usnews.com/articles/education/paying-for-college/2010/07/12/most-public-colleges-face-budget-cut-threats-in-2011.html recessionreality.blogspot.com/ www.ohe.state.mn.us/pdf/Enrollment/INSIGHT/InsightApr06.htm www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/college/2010-07-11-college-funding_N.htm
